It is called the place of no return. Sharadvatiputra, why is it called unborn? Because Sharadvatiputra has not even the slightest birth, therefore it is called unborn. The wisdom that Sharadvatiputra has is called unborn wisdom. The Shravakas do not have the wisdom of 'no birth from here,' and the Shravakas do not have the wisdom of 'no birth after this,' therefore it is called the wisdom of the Buddhas is infinite. Why is the wisdom of the Buddhas infinite? Because that wisdom is unparalleled and endless, therefore it is called the wisdom of the Buddhas is infinite. Because that wisdom has no object, therefore it is called the wisdom of the Buddhas. Sharadvatiputra, how is the so-called wisdom of the Buddhas taught? Because that wisdom is enlightened, therefore it is called the wisdom of the Buddhas. Because that wisdom is sought, therefore it is called the wisdom of the Buddhas. Sharadvatiputra, how is the so-called Buddha taught? Sharadvatiputra, these sentient beings are changing. Sharadvatiputra, these sentient beings are flowing everywhere from this place. Because they do not understand, Sharadvatiputra, therefore he has awakened to all dharmas, so he is called Buddha. How does he awaken to all dharmas? How does he awaken that those dharmas do not exist, and the non-dharmas do not exist, those without all afflictions, without purification, those without past, without future, without present arising, thus he awakens. How does he awaken that there is no birth, entry, destruction, coming, going, all afflictions, purification, cessation, thus he awakens. Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, because it is infinite and immeasurable, difficult to measure and difficult to understand, therefore it is Buddha. Sharadvatiputra, for example, the great ocean is of one taste, without decrease or increase, and is deep. Sharadvatiputra, similarly, the ocean of the Tathagata is also like this, with the taste of liberation, the taste of no birth, the taste of no destruction as one taste, and because he teaches profound dharma, he focuses on teaching the dharma in sequence, and...

To cut off all "mothers", taking all the washing water, to not forget all the dharmas, there is no writing, for the dharma to abide, there is no filling. Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, if the Buddha appears, who would believe this? Sharadvatiputra, for example, when the great Naga king of the ocean rains, in this way, in the great ocean, it only rains in its own place. What is the reason for that? Sharadvatiputra, because there is no place that can bear the flow of the Naga king's ocean water, except for the place blessed by the Tathagata. Sharadvatiputra, similarly, if the Tathagata teaches the dharmata of the Tathagata, and speaks of the characteristics of the Buddha's wisdom, Sharadvatiputra, except for the Bodhisattva who has entered the Mahayana and is blessed by the Tathagata, I have not truly seen any Shravaka, or Pratyekabuddha, or any sentient being in the category of sentient beings who can fully know. Sharadvatiputra, these four places are difficult to realize, difficult to obtain, and extremely difficult to obtain, and today they have been obtained. What are the four? Sharadvatiputra, human existence is extremely difficult to obtain. Sharadvatiputra, the appearance of the Tathagata is extremely difficult to obtain. Sharadvatiputra, faith in the teachings of the Tathagata is extremely difficult to obtain. Sharadvatiputra, after obtaining faith, asking about what is and is not the place is extremely difficult to obtain. Sharadvatiputra, these four places are extremely difficult to obtain and difficult to realize, and you have obtained them. Sharadvatiputra, ask me about whatever dharma you have doubts about. Sharadvatiputra, you dispel doubts for the world including the gods. Sharadvatiputra, soon I will completely pass into nirvana, Sharadvatiputra, it would not be good to regret it later, ask me. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and placed the kneecap of his right knee on the ground.
