That is renunciation. At that time, it was surrounded by an army of four divisions. At that time, all entered the supreme vehicle. The supreme among bipeds will become a Buddha. At that time, faith arose in the Buddha's teachings, and they renounced. From practicing the Dharma, they also cultivated patience. When life was exhausted, they made the time of death. All of them were born in the heavenly realms. Twenty kotis of Sugatas with great fame. They appeared during the time of that guiding Buddha. All were pleased by all of them. They also practiced the Dharma in all the teachings. They constantly and continuously exerted effort. With the power of wisdom, they were fearless. They accomplished great benefit for the people. They liberated hundreds of thousands of living beings. The Sugata, having taken up the Dharma, spoke. They became the victorious guides. They made the teachings vast. They gave up their bodies, and likewise, they gave up their lives. Who would not enter the supreme vehicle? Its ripening is unsurpassed. They will attain supreme, unsurpassed wisdom. They will touch the peaceful, sorrowless Bodhi. Sharadvatiputra, at that time, at that moment, there was a king named Dabyin, endowed with Dharma, a king of Dharma, who offered the kingdom as enjoyment to the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the King of Bliss, and renounced from household to homelessness. Do you think that was someone else? Sharadvatiputra, do you doubt or hesitate? Sharadvatiputra, you should not look at it that way. Why? Because at that time, at that moment, I was that king named Dabyin. Sharadvatiputra, at that time, at that moment, there appeared a prince named Most Excellent Merit. Do you doubt or hesitate that it was someone else? You should not look at it that way. Sharadvatiputra, at that time, at that moment, this Bodhisattva Mahasattva Steadfast Intelligence was the prince named Most Excellent Merit. Sharadvatiputra, the nature of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas is that when they see sentient beings afflicted by suffering, they generate great compassion. Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, a Bodhisattva is a Dharma…

I am extremely diligent towards women. I completely seek only the profound Dharma. I also correctly and diligently show only the profound Dharma. Sharadvatiputra, what are those profound Dharmas that the steadfast ones practice? Sharadvatiputra, who are those steadfast ones? Sharadvatiputra, Bodhisattvas are called steadfast, for they will not become weary or lazy from unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Sharadvatiputra, they are called steadfast, for they are holders of the Dharmas. What Dharmas do they hold? The eye holds Dharma. Sharadvatiputra, if the eye holds Dharma, that is not Dharma, for it is ungraspable. Sharadvatiputra, what is Dharma? By nature, it is neither within nor without, there is no self, nor is there mine, there is no complete affliction, nor is there purification. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind hold Dharma, but what is Dharma is not the mind. Sharadvatiputra, what is called Dharma is that which is without self, without mine, without outer, without inner, without complete affliction, without purification, without arising, and without ceasing. Sharadvatiputra, why is that? Because that is its nature. What is nature? It is unmade and unchanging. Therefore, the mind is called Dharma. Sharadvatiputra, why is it called holding? Because it holds emptiness, it holds signlessness, and it holds wishlessness. It holds non-apprehension as wishlessness, and non-apprehension is wishlessness. Sharadvatiputra, what other Dharmas are there? They are neither abandoned nor established. What is neither abandoned nor established? This is the holding of all Dharmas, therefore it is called Bodhisattva. Sharadvatiputra, what is called Bodhisattva, Sharadvatiputra, is called Bodhisattva because it is a mind close to the Buddhas. It is called Bodhisattva because there is no Bodhi. Moreover, because that being enters Bodhi through the very nature of non-being,

It is called Bodhisattva. Sharadvatiputra, if a Bodhisattva abides, then he will teach in this way. Why? Sharadvatiputra, the absence of teaching is Bodhisattva. What is not taught? Nothing is taught, so it is called teaching. Sharadvatiputra, those who are endowed with joy are devoted to non-duality. They neither speak of the Dharma nor of what is not Dharma, so they are called Bodhisattvas. Sharadvatiputra, moreover, what is called Bodhi is emptiness. Sharadvatiputra, what is called emptiness, what is empty? It is empty of all dharmas. Sharadvatiputra, if there is a perception of Dharma, it will become an attachment to perception, an attachment to self, an attachment to sentient beings, an attachment to life, an attachment to person, and an attachment to all attachments, so it is called attachment to perception. Because those are not there, it is called emptiness. Emptiness is Bodhi. Sharadvatiputra, moreover, all dharmas are Bodhi, and thus, having realized perfect enlightenment, you should conform and not fail to conform. Why? Because Bodhi is profound, so profound that all ordinary people cannot reach it. Sharadvatiputra, let alone ordinary people! Sharadvatiputra, even Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas contemplate the knowledge of extinction, and they also contemplate the knowledge of non-arising. Although they realize the knowledge of non-arising, they cannot reach it. If it is called the knowledge of extinction because of what is to be extinguished, then it is not called the knowledge of extinction because of extinguishing any Dharma. Moreover, because of the extinction nature of all dharmas, it is called the knowledge of extinction. Because this knowledge belongs to the noble ones, it is called the knowledge of extinction. There is no such knowledge that knows that this much has been extinguished, there is no such knowledge that knows that it is being extinguished in this way, and there is no such knowledge that knows that it will be extinguished from now on, so it is called the knowledge of extinction. Therefore, even Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas
