All were Arhats, their defilements exhausted, their tasks completed, their duties done, their burdens cast off, their own benefit fully attained, the bonds of existence utterly consumed, and completely liberated through the wisdom of equanimity. In that era of Anavatapta, in a royal palace called Sudarsana, there arose a king crowned from the head of the royal family, named Simhadyuti. King Simhadyuti had a most excellent queen, who gave birth to twin sons, one named Asoka and the other named Vigataśoka. In that era of Anavatapta, when these two boys were about seven years old, they were both dwelling in a mansion. They saw the Tathagata Śivarāja, the King of Bliss, together with the assembly of Śrāvakas, going to the royal palace of Sudarsana. Then the boy Asoka said to his elder brother Vigataśoka: Vigataśoka, do you see the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, Śivarāja, coming from so far away? He replied: Brother, I see him. He said: Vigataśoka, I will become exactly like that Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, Śivarāja. Then the boy Asoka spoke to his elder brother Vigataśoka in verses: Great protector, supreme among men, With the Sangha of monks leading the way, The King of Bliss comes this way, Vigataśoka, do you see him? I will become just like that supreme among men, I have generated the mind of Bodhi, I will liberate beings from fear. These beings, with greed, arrogance, and hatred, Create suffering through desire, Having created it, they fall into the abyss of hell, I will liberate them from the evil realms. The guide of the world in the world, Like the flower of the Udumbara, Is difficult to find, exceedingly rare, You should generate aspiration. Then the boy Vigataśoka replied to his younger brother in verses: Speaking many words, Does not accomplish anything with words. Since I abide in practice, I will not speak much at all. Speaking many words,

There is no present existence. Its fruit does not appear, It is merely speaking false words. If words could obtain, I would be wrapped around the great Mount Light. All those who have lost merit, Will become victors through words. Then, the boy Ashoka again spoke to the boy Vigatashoka in verses: It is oneself and not another, Why do you speak such words? Therefore, not speaking anything, That mind is miserly. I Seek sentient beings as guests, I always give. I have no miserliness at all, May I become one who leads beings. Those who have become wise, They do not speak any words. After speaking many words, How can they act accordingly? They, from the very beginning, Have been endowed with a miserly mind. Therefore, will it happen? Or will it not happen, but just be spoken. Then, the boy Vigatashoka again spoke to his younger brother Ashoka in verses: Having become one and departed, Younger brother, you and I, Whose bodhicitta is greater, We shall ask that protector. Then, the boy Vigatashoka descended from the top of the mansion, holding shoes made of jewels, and also holding various kinds of clothes, and went to where the Tathagata Sugata King of Bliss was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan and sat on one side. The boy Ashoka, however, abandoned himself from the top of the mansion. Then, the boy Ashoka went to where the Bhagavan Tathagata Sugata King of Bliss was. That boy also held precious clothes and a crest jewel, and that boy offered that cloth and that crest jewel to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan accepted the hand of the boy Ashoka. The boy Vigatashoka arrived later at the place where the Bhagavan was, but the boy Ashoka arrived first. He saw the boy Ashoka sitting before the Tathagata Sugata King of Bliss, and having seen him, he said: Ashoka, from which path did you arrive first at the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha King of Bliss?

went away. He said: Brother, from that magnificent palace, I abandoned myself at the place where the Blessed One is. I have come to the place where the Blessed One is, without any harm or reproach to my body. Then, after the boy Ashoka heard the answer from the boy Vitasoka, he offered those two shoes and the precious clothes to the Blessed One, and at that time he prayed in verses: Do not go on the evil path, may you see the guide of the world. May you always rely on the path taught by the Buddha. Then, the boy Vitasoka also said to his brother in verses: Those who protect the body and the lord of life, they will always seek the path, brother, you are like that. Those who always seek happiness, they do not seek the happiness of others. After abandoning body, life, and dominion, in other places, various kinds of suffering will arise. Also do great benefit for people, and completely liberate them from the net of suffering. This path is the path to see the Buddha, after seeing the Buddha, do not seek the path externally. We should go from the path to happiness, those who do not understand and are not proficient will become arrogant. Then, they will go on the evil path. Those who go on the evil path, those with true wisdom, regard that path as an evil path. Such a person is always controlled by the bonds of Mara, such a person is far from this supreme path. May you always meet the Buddhas, may you always wear the monastic robes, may you always attain pure conduct, may you truly benefit sentient beings after birth. May you always abide in the practice of the Dharma, may you always uphold the Dharma, always uphold the teachings of the Buddhas, always benefit sentient beings. May you always firmly initiate diligence, may the Dharma that is heard not be wasted, may all times be equally abiding, may you always adorn yourself with virtues. After the boy Ashoka and the boy Vitasoka spoke those verses, they unanimously went forth from home to homelessness in the presence of the Tathagata, the King of Bliss, and completely renounced. Thus, they immediately renounced.
