Then, they said to each other: I shall become a Tathagata first. Then, the monk Ashoka said to the monk Vigatashoka: Vigatashoka, you should let me be the first to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. When he said that, what kind of thought did you generate? He said: Ashoka, here, I thought that if I have not attained unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, even if I ripen in the hells of sentient beings for hundreds of thousands of kalpas for the sake of each sentient being, I will not abandon the mind of enlightenment. Ashoka, that is how I generated the mind. Ashoka, however, if someone comes from the east above my head, and likewise from all directions, and places a dung wine, a ball of fire, a ball of dust, a pot of dung, a pot of fire, or a pot of dust on my head, I will not generate malice because of that, I will not generate anger, I will not look at that person because of anger, and I will not say, because of being angry: What harm have I done to him? I will practice the perfections for the sake of that very sentient being who has created that action against me. Because the action that he has done is the creation of the wisdom of the Buddha, that action is the creation of the Dharma of the Buddha. If I do not keep my mind even when the causes arise, how will I perfect the perfection of patience? What would be so amazing if I did not encounter the causes of malice? Therefore, in order to fully ripen those sentient beings, and for the sake of fully liberating them, I should put on armor, so I put on such armor of patience. If I also generate malice towards those sentient beings who generate malice, what special thing will happen to me? Ashoka, that is how I put on armor. Then, the monk Ashoka said this to the monk Vigatashoka.

Brother, do you see with what mind you have donned the armor? He said: If the mind does not exist, then such donning of armor does not exist. And if the armor does not exist, then the manifestation also does not exist. O Free from Sorrow, because the mind exists, therefore the manifestation of the armor also exists. Then, the monk Free from Sorrow said to the monk Free from Grief thus: Do not say that as the mind exists, so does the armor exist. Why is that? O Free from Grief, the mind is of the nature of arising and ceasing, therefore it is like an illusion. For the mind of the nature of arising and ceasing, like an illusion, there is neither existence nor non-existence. O Free from Grief, existence or non-existence, that is a view. Such a view is a wrong view. Whoever has a wrong view is on the wrong path and not on the right path. That is not the path to enlightenment, so his enlightenment is far away, and enlightenment is not near. His enlightenment is difficult to reach. O Free from Grief, therefore, all these are elaborations. Those who are endowed with elaborations of Dharma and with pride in Dharma are not to be associated with by a Bodhisattva. What is the Dharma to be associated with by a Bodhisattva? A Bodhisattva should not associate with any Dharma. Why is that? Because if one associates with Dharmas, one will associate with non-Dharmas. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should not be attached to all Dharmas. Why is that? Because enlightenment has no basis. If a Bodhisattva thus generates pride, that is also not Dharma. Why is that? Because enlightenment is without pride. If a Bodhisattva thus abides, that is also not Dharma. Why is that? Because enlightenment has no abiding place. If a Bodhisattva thus believes, that is also not Dharma. Why is that? Because enlightenment has no belief. If a Bodhisattva thus fully understands, that is also not Dharma. Why is that?

Because enlightenment is without characteristics. If a Bodhisattva understands it in that way, that is not Dharma either. Why is that? Because enlightenment is immutable. If a Bodhisattva thinks, 'I should manifest it in that way,' and meditates in that way, that is not Dharma either. Why is that? Because enlightenment does not exist, and that enlightenment is without letters. Then, the monk Vigatashoka said to the monk Ashoka: "Ashoka, does enlightenment not exist? Therefore, it is said that way. If Vigatashoka exists and I exist, then enlightenment also exists." The monk Ashoka said: "Brother, do you say that enlightenment exists in the non-elaborate enlightenment? Do not discriminate that enlightenment does not exist. Why is that? As much as there is elaboration, that is not enlightenment. Why is that? Because enlightenment is without elaboration, this is the rule. Or, as much as there is elaboration, that much is enlightenment." Vigatashoka said: "Brother, as much as there is elaboration, that is enlightenment. I do not understand the meaning of what you said." Then, the monk Ashoka said to his brother: "Brother, therefore, let us two go together to where the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the King of Bliss is." Then those two went to where the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the King of Bliss was, bowed their heads to the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. After those two sat down on one side, they told the Blessed One all the conversations that had taken place. Then, the Blessed One said to the monk Ashoka: "Ashoka, well done, well done." After giving him 'well done,' he then said to the monk Vigatashoka: "Vigatashoka, it is just like that, as much as there is elaboration, that is enlightenment. Why is that? Because all elaboration is solitary, and that enlightenment is also solitary. What is solitude? It is whatever elaboration there is. What is elaboration? It is discrimination, form is elaboration, as well as feeling, perception, formations, and so on."
