O elders, the Blessed One gave these seven lotuses in order to fully ripen the Dharma of the path to enlightenment. Sons of good family, take these great lotuses and transform them all into offerings to the Blessed One. Transform them all and reveal your own skillful means. Thus he gave those seven lotuses. Then, those seventy-seven thousand Bodhisattvas took those lotuses and offered them to the Blessed One in order to reveal their own skillful means. The Blessed One, out of compassion for those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, accepted those seven great lotuses. Having accepted them, he spoke to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Avinivartin: "Avinivartin, the Tathagata now manifests in order to generate your roots of virtue, he manifests exceedingly. Avinivartin, the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha is extremely difficult to obtain and most difficult to obtain. Avinivartin, Bodhisattvas are also extremely and most difficult to obtain. Why is that? Avinivartin, those Buddhadharmas necessarily arise from the conduct of Bodhisattvas. Avinivartin, if I had not generated the mind of enlightenment in the past, Avinivartin, would the ten powers of the Tathagata arise now?" He replied: "Blessed One, no." The Blessed One said: "Avinivartin, what do you think? If I had not generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment in the past, would the four fearlessnesses arise now?" He replied: "Blessed One, no." He said: "Avinivartin, what do you think? If I had not generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment in the past, would the great loving-kindness of the Tathagata arise in the world now?" He replied: "Blessed One, no." He said: "Avinivartin, what do you think? If I had not generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment in the past, would great compassion arise in the world now?" Similarly, the

And upon what does great joy and great equanimity arise? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. The Buddha said: Maitreya, what do you think? If I had not generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, would the eighteen unmixed qualities of the Buddha arise in the world now? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. The Buddha said: Maitreya, what do you think? If I had not generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, would the meaningful subjugation of the Tathagata arise in the world now? If I had not generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment in the past, would the very gait of the Tathagata, like a lion, arise in the world now?
