It is so. Knowing liberation without obscurations is being without attachment. All phenomena that are completely pure by nature arise from the collection of causes and conditions. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should fully understand the causes of all defilements and the causes of complete purification. One should not abide in purifying with the causes of all defilements, or in purifying with the causes of complete purification. The arising of self and the arising of views are the causes of all defilements. Endurance in entering the selflessness of phenomena is the cause of complete purification. Clinging to self and the view of pride are the causes of all defilements. Inner peace and not wandering outward are the causes of complete purification. Desire, malice, various forms of harm, and conceptual thoughts are the causes of all defilements. The contemplation of ugliness, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity, and endurance in entering the dependent arising of phenomena are the causes of complete purification. The four inversions are the causes of all defilements. The four mindfulnesses are the causes of complete purification. The five obscurations are the causes of all defilements. The five faculties are the causes of complete purification. The six sense bases are the causes of all defilements. The six recollections are the causes of complete purification. The seven non-noble dharmas are the causes of all defilements. The seven branches of enlightenment are the causes of complete purification. The eight wrong paths are the causes of all defilements. The eight right paths are the causes of complete purification. The nine objects of all tormenting thoughts are the causes of all defilements. The nine successive abidings of meditative absorption are the causes of complete purification. The ten paths of unwholesome actions are the causes of all defilements. The ten paths of wholesome actions are the causes of complete purification. In short, all unwholesome thoughts are the causes of all defilements. All wholesome thoughts are the causes of complete purification. So, what are the causes of all defilements?

And, all those dharmas that are the cause of complete purification are empty of inherent existence, without sentient beings, without life, without individuals, without lords, without grasping, without agents, like illusions, without characteristics, and inwardly peaceful. What is inwardly peaceful? It is utterly peaceful. What is utterly peaceful? It is inherent nature. What is inherent nature? It is without object. What is without object? It is without location. What is without location? It is suchness. Suchness is space. Therefore, if one thoroughly knows all dharmas to be like space, even if one acts with affliction and purification, one does not abandon the dharma nature of space. Why is that? Manjushri, because there is no dharma that arises or ceases. Manjushri asked: Blessed One, then how did the Tathagata attain enlightenment? The Blessed One replied: Manjushri, the Tathagata attained enlightenment without root and without location. Manjushri asked: Blessed One, what is the root? What is the location? The Blessed One replied: Manjushri, the aggregates of existence are the root. Incorrect conceptualization is the location. Manjushri, the Tathagata, with the equality of enlightenment, knows all dharmas to be equal. Manjushri, therefore, the Tathagata is called perfectly and completely enlightened without root and without location. Manjushri, enlightenment is peaceful and near to peaceful. Among them, what is peaceful? What is near to peaceful? The inner is peaceful. The outer is near to peaceful. Why is that? Manjushri, the eye is empty of self and what belongs to self, because its nature is such, it is called peaceful. If one thoroughly knows the eye to be empty, one does not pursue forms, therefore it is called near to peaceful. Similarly, the ear is empty of self and what belongs to self, because its nature is such, it is called peaceful. If one thoroughly knows the ear to be empty, one does not pursue sounds, therefore it is called near to peaceful. The nose is empty of self and

Empty of self and what belongs to self, because its nature is such, it is called peaceful. Having fully understood that the nose is empty, it does not run after smells, therefore it is called pacified. The tongue is also empty of self and what belongs to self, because its nature is such, it is called peaceful. Having fully understood that the tongue is empty, it does not run after tastes, therefore it is called pacified. The body is also empty of self and what belongs to self, because its nature is such, it is called peaceful. Having fully understood that the body is empty, it does not run after tangibles, therefore it is called pacified. Manjushri, the mind is also empty of self and what belongs to self, because its nature is such, it is called peaceful. Having fully understood that the mind is empty, it does not run after dharmas, therefore it is called pacified. Manjushri, enlightenment is the nature of the mind, luminous by its very nature. Why is it called luminous? Because whatever is its nature is free from all afflictions, equal to space, possessing the nature of space, perfectly gathered in space, like space, because it is extremely luminous by its very nature. Manjushri, enlightenment is without acceptance and without rejection. What is without acceptance and what is without rejection? What is called without acceptance is that all dharmas are ungraspable. What is called without rejection is that all dharmas are unabandonable. Manjushri, the Tathagata crosses the river by being without acceptance and without rejection. Just as one does not truly see this shore, nor does one truly see the other shore, so does one cross the river. Thus, the Tathagata fully awakens to all dharmas that are separated from this shore and the other shore, therefore he is called Tathagata. Manjushri, enlightenment is without characteristics and without objects. What is without characteristics and what is without objects? Manjushri, the non-objectification of eye consciousness is without characteristics.
