In this place, no dharma arises or ceases. Having fully understood the self-nature of all dharmas, one obtains tolerance for the dharma of non-arising. Maudgalyayana's son, what do you think? Do you think that the hermit named Immaculate Wisdom who existed at that time was someone else? You should not view it that way. I was the hermit named Immaculate Wisdom at that time. I have thoroughly established countless trillions of beings in selflessness. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, the bodhisattva should make his view immaculate. He should fully understand the self-nature of selfless dharmas as they truly are. He should understand them individually. A bodhisattva who fully understands the self-nature of selfless dharmas as they truly are will quickly become irreversible from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Maudgalyayana's son, I have spoken from the meaning of knowing the defilements of views and knowing their cessation, and so forth, up to the point of manifest aggregation and up to the point of thinking about how I should truly and thoroughly explain it. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, in the time that has passed, beyond the far shore, there was a hermit named Wise Intelligence, who had great miraculous powers, and so forth, up to the point of being free from desire. He went to a solitary place, and dwelling correctly within, he generated such thoughts in his mind: Alas! This world is afflicted, and thus, it is not fully understood how to escape from suffering. He thought to himself: What is the escape from suffering? He thought to himself: Suffering arises from thought, and if there is no thought, it will not arise. Having understood this, he realized that when all compounded things are pacified, craving is exhausted, and all desires are abandoned, cessation is nirvana, which is peace. This is wonderful! He thought to himself: Is there any sentient being who has not attained nirvana, or is there anyone who has attained nirvana? As he properly focused his mind in this way, such a perception arose: If there is any sentient being, then there is nirvana.

If there is something that transcends, then because there are no sentient beings, there is no nirvana. The consciousness of sentient beings is harmed by the suffering arising from itself, and the nirvana that beings seek is not another nirvana, nor another aggregate, but the aggregate itself is nirvana. What is the reason for that? It is because the aim of sentient beings is nirvana. Knowing that this is mindfulness, he arises from that samadhi, utters a sound, and then proclaims the sound: One's own pervasive thought is the entry into the aggregate of suffering. The absence of pervasive thought is the cessation of the aggregate of suffering. No sentient being is born, no dharma ceases, and there is no other distinction in dharma; that is called nirvana. When that sound was heard by countless hundreds of thousands of beings, they obtained forbearance of the unborn dharma and became irreversible from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Maudgalyayana's son, what do you think? At that time, do you think that the one who became known as the Wise Sage was someone else? You should not think that way; at that time, I became known as the Wise Sage. When that sound was heard by countless hundreds of thousands of beings, they obtained forbearance of the unborn dharma. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva who desires to manifestly awaken to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment should be skilled in wisdom. Maudgalyayana's son, in order for me to know that the defilements of view are exhausted and to know the path that can cease them, one should practice as before, starting from the conduct of past Bodhisattvas. Maudgalyayana's son, from countless eons ago in the past, on the far shore beyond that, there was one called Sage Renown, who had great magical powers and splendor, and one should practice in that way until one becomes free from desire. At that time, there were seven thousand Brahmin boys and the four great elements, reciting the secret mantra that abides in the equality of the three times, the undifferentiated nature of the great elements. At that time, in the retinue of those Brahmin boys, there was the Brahmin boy Supreme Intelligence.
