He obtained forbearance in the Dharma. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should be skilled in contemplating the arising of views. Maudgalyayana's son, in order to know the defilements of views, in order to know their arising, when a Bodhisattva of the past practiced, he combined them thus, up to the point of thinking, "How should I truly and well explain it?" Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, in the time that has passed, beyond the far shore, there was a sage named Immaculate Wisdom, with great miraculous powers, great strength, detached from the desires of external paths. He thought thus: "If there is something, then views will truly arise. If there is nothing, then views will be abandoned." He thought thus: "If there are three groups of darkness, then all views will arise, and if those themselves do not exist, then views will not arise." What are the three groups of darkness? "Did I exist or not exist in the past? Did I arise and become in the past? Will I exist or not exist in the future? Did I arise and become in the future?" Even in this present time, doubt and uncertainty arise: "What am I? What am I like? Have I come into existence? How did I come into existence? Where have those sentient beings gone? Where will they go after dying from here?" He thinks, "I exist," and then he becomes certain of that, and he becomes attached to permanence. He speculates about the past, obtains four views of permanence, and obtains four views of absolute permanence. He obtains four views and statements about the end, obtains sixteen views and statements about perception. He obtains eight views of perception. He obtains eight views that are neither perception nor non-perception. He obtains five views of Nirvana in this life, and obtains seven annihilationist views, and thus certainty does not arise. He obtains two causeless views, and thus certainty does not arise. He obtains four kinds of deceptive speech views, and thus he does not become certain that I exist. He binds five views of Nirvana in this life, and obtains four annihilationist views, all of which are annihilationist.

And, abiding in the two extremes of permanence, those two individuals entered into meditative absorption. Some Lokayatas (materialists) see that the self (Sanskrit: ātman) arises from causelessness. Although they attain one-pointedness of mind through meditative absorption, they do not remember death. Those Lokayatas, having examined and articulated, speak thus: "It arises from causelessness, and that causelessness is unstoppable," thus seeing permanence, annihilation, and infinity. By what other reasoning can all sentient beings arise? Like this, relying on these two extremes, they discern with their intellect. Having thus properly applied their minds, the eye of wisdom arises, and in this, there is no sentient being. From afflictions, karma arises; from karma, perfectly ripened results arise; and from that, consciousness arises. Ignorance and craving are afflictions; actions and existence are the field; grasping is the seed; the sprout is birth. From that arise suffering, aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, and strife. Likewise, this tree of suffering arises. Similarly, for these previously unheard-of dharmas, apart from conditions, here no dharma arises or ceases. For example, because this exists, that arises; because this is born, that is born. For example, with ignorance as the condition, there are actions; with actions as the condition, there is consciousness; with consciousness as the condition, up to old age and death. Likewise, this mass of suffering entirely arises, I do not think, nor do others think. How does that change from other conditions? Likewise, fully understanding up to old age and death. He thinks thus: "Alas! This abiding of the world is illusory!" Thinking thus, he rises from that samadhi and, sitting in the midst of hundreds and thousands of retinues, teaches this dharma. "Friends, here no sentient being arises or ceases. You should individually realize the nature of dharmas as they truly are, and that which is without nature is the nature of dharmas." When he extensively teaches the nature of dharmas, countless beings...
