For those skilled in discernment, an understanding arose that comprehended the benefit of beings. He went to a secluded place and, abiding in inner right concentration, pondered thus: "Are the self and the world eternal? Or are the self and the world impermanent? Or are the self and the world both eternal and impermanent? Or are the self and the world neither eternal nor impermanent? Does the self and the world have an end? Or are the self and the world endless? Or are the self and the world both having an end and not having an end? Or are the self and the world neither having an end nor not having an end? Is the life the same as the body? Or is the life different and the body different? Does the Thus-Gone One exist after death? Or does the Thus-Gone One not exist after death? Or does the Thus-Gone One both exist and not exist after death? Or does the Thus-Gone One neither exist nor not exist after death? Some ascetics and Brahmins assert annihilation, some ascetics and Brahmins assert permanence. Among them, those who assert permanence are four. Some assert four kinds of impermanence. Those who assert an end are four. Those who assert that all things arise without a cause are two. Those who are confused in speech are four. Those who assert perception are sixteen. Those who assert non-perception are eight. Those who assert neither perception nor non-perception are eight. Those who assert faith arising in visible phenomena are five. Those who assert annihilation are seven. Some ascetics and Brahmins believe that the eternal self, free from illness after death, is the only truth, and all else is false. They see and speak thus. Some ascetics and Brahmins believe that the impermanent self, free from illness after death, is the only truth, and all else is false. They see and speak thus. Some ascetics and Brahmins believe that the self that is both eternal and impermanent, free from illness after death, is the only truth, and all else is false. They see and speak thus. Some ascetics and Brahmins believe that the self that is neither eternal nor impermanent, free from illness after death, from "this is the only truth" onwards, connect as before, they see and speak thus. This situation exists. If some ascetics or Brahmins, after following effort, after following abandonment
