He obtained the cognition as it appears in the wheel. He firmly established countless millions of beings in that patience. Son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? At that time, do you think that the one who became known as the righteous one abiding in the Dharma was someone else? You should not see it that way. At that time, I was the one who became known as the righteous one abiding in the Dharma. At that time, I firmly established countless millions of beings in the samadhi that is like an appearance in a mirror. Those roots of virtue were also dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Therefore, son of Maudgalyayana, a Bodhisattva should focus his mind on the dharmas that appear like reflections in a mirror. A Bodhisattva whose mind is focused on the dharmas that appear like reflections in a mirror will not turn back from the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Son of Maudgalyayana, from the point of knowing the cessation of the outflows of desire, up to the point where various roots of virtue are manifestly gathered, it should be similarly expanded. Son of Maudgalyayana, in the immeasurable past aeons, beyond the far shore, there was a righteous one named Udyadatta, who had great miraculous powers, great splendor, and great strength. He thought to himself: Among the dharmas that I have realized, is there any other dharma that is more manifest or more excellent? He thought to himself: The dharmas that I have understood are the dharmas of cessation. Which dharma is the dharma without cessation, that will become more manifest and more excellent? He thought to himself: Whatever dharmas are born are the dharmas of cessation, and whatever is unborn is the dharma without cessation. He thought to himself: What is that unborn dharma? He thought to himself: Because it is not real, all dharmas are unborn by their own nature. All dharmas are without self-nature. All dharmas are devoid of self-nature. Therefore, what is the self-nature of all dharmas?

That is unborn. When he properly contemplates in that way, tolerance for the unborn dharma arises. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, in a time long past, there was an ascetic named Vipashyana-caryā, who had great magical powers, great splendor, and great strength, and who, by means of external paths, was free from attachment to desires. He thought to himself, "What is the arising of the outflow of desire? What is it that, if it does not exist, will not arise?" He thought to himself, "Arising is none other than attending to objects, and without attending to them, it will not arise. This is none other than the cessation of the outflow of desire; I think this is the path." When he properly attended to it in that way, because the outflow of desire is selfless, he generated the path of true meaning. Just as this path causes the outflow of desire to cease and not arise, so too, this path causes all outflows to cease and not arise. When he properly attended to it in that way, he obtained the five superknowledges. Having obtained the five superknowledges, he firmly established many assemblies of beings in the five superknowledges. Maudgalyayana's son, what do you think? At that time, that ascetic named Vipashyana-caryā

If you think that the one called 'Pa' is someone else, you should not think that way. At that time, at that moment, I was the one called 'Righteous One Who Practices Higher Vision.' I established countless beings in the five superknowledges. Maudgalyayana, therefore, a Bodhisattva who wishes to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment should always teach, meditate on, and extensively practice these paths. A Bodhisattva who abides in the five superknowledges will benefit all sentient beings. Maudgalyayana, in order to know the defilements of existence, from when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past until the attainment of manifest realization, it should be combined in that way. Maudgalyayana, in the immeasurable past aeons, even far beyond that, there was a righteous one named 'Delighting in Existence.' He had great magical powers, great splendor, and great strength. He was free from attachment to desires through external paths. He understood existence to be without essence, understood it to be impermanent, understood it to be suffering, understood it to be faulty. He understood all existence to be evil, defiled, without breath, and of a nature that completely changes. Those sentient beings who greatly delight in existence are suffering. Why is that? Because whatever is called 'existence' is the origin of suffering. All sentient beings dislike suffering and desire happiness. If sentient beings greatly delight in existence, they greatly delight in suffering, and they do not truly understand happiness. Why is that? Because the origin of this suffering is existence. If it does not arise, then suffering does not exist. When he properly attends to it in that way, he becomes disgusted with existence. When he becomes disgusted with existence, he does not abide in existence. He thinks to himself: 'This wisdom that does not abide in existence is supreme, principal, and excellent.' Then, he rises from that samadhi and utters a sound: 'Existence is suffering, not abiding in existence is happiness.'
