The Bodhisattva of Infinite Power then addressed the Tathagata, the one who transcends all beings, as follows: "If the Tathagata were to command me, I would, by the Tathagata's command, hold compassion for all sentient beings. As the Blessed One instructs, I would even be willing to reside in a smokeless, blazing pit of fire for countless eons." After he spoke thus, the Tathagata, the one who transcends all beings, completely passed into the realm of nirvana without remainder. Then, the Bodhisattva of Infinite Power extensively honored the relics of that Tathagata. Remembering the Tathagata's teachings, he held compassion for sentient beings and manifested countless billions of hundreds of thousands of incalculable emanations. He filled that Buddha-field with non-returning Bodhisattvas like flowers, and then relinquished his life. Maudgalyayana's son, do you think that the Bodhisattva named Infinite Power at that time was someone else? You should not see it that way. At that time, I was the Bodhisattva named Infinite Power. I filled that Buddha-field with Bodhisattvas like flowers, truly propagated the lineage of the Buddha, extensively honored the relics of the Tathagata, and then passed away. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva should strive not to sever the lineage of the Buddha, and then later attain perfect enlightenment. Maudgalyayana's son, in order to know the outflows of desire, in the past, while practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I thought, 'After I attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, how should I truly and thoroughly reveal to sentient beings the way to know the outflows of desire?' Then I accumulated countless diverse roots of virtue. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, in a time long ago, even more distant than that, there was a king named Following the Nature of All Beings, who was wise and

Sarala Yidzhungpa, a wise man appeared who was skilled in distinguishing the aggregates of senses of beings. He truly knew how those beings who are attached to form, how their desire for form is. He saw that these beings were extremely tormented by attachment to form, and burned by attachment to form. He thought about the method of abandoning the desire for form in those beings, that is, by what method can those beings not generate the desire for form that has already arisen, and can also abandon the desire that has already arisen. These beings are very tormented by attachment to form, and their minds, completely burned by desire, should not fall into the hell of beings at the time of death. Because they are extremely tormented by the fire of desire, they are burned by the fire of the hell of beings, and they cannot escape the net of death from these two extreme sufferings. The harm of suffering is connected at birth, connected at death, and connected when going from this world to another world! When he was looking for a method, he measured it completely like this: Children are bound by the perception of purity due to the power of discrimination, and they are separated from the nature of emptiness, only the duality of color. If it is summarized, it is impurity, and there is no purity here. Just like the illusion of a rotating torch, due to inverted clinging, the arising of desire is connected with purity, and they cling to it very strongly. In this way, it is connected at birth, connected at aging, and connected at death. Those who run in samsara cannot know the beginning! He repeatedly and truly showed the impurity to those beings. When he truly showed them the impurity, countless millions of beings completely understood the concept of impurity and entered the wisdom of impurity. They completely knew the nature of all dharmas as they are. After completely knowing, countless millions of beings were transformed by the concept of impurity, separated from desire and attachment, and were born in the Brahma world. Shariputra, what do you think? At that time, the king was all beings.

If you think that the king called "Following the Nature of All Beings" is someone else, you should not think that way. Why? Because at that time, I was the king called "Following the Nature of All Beings." I transformed countless beings with the perception of impurity and caused them to be born in the Brahma world. All of them thoroughly understood the nature of form and became irreversible from the unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment. Maudgalyayana, therefore, a Bodhisattva should thoroughly understand the nature of form as it truly is, and should also teach it to sentient beings in the same way. A Bodhisattva who thoroughly understands the nature of form and teaches it to sentient beings in the same way will become irreversible from the unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment. Maudgalyayana, I, for the purpose of knowing the outflows of desire, knowing their origin, and so on, should apply it in the same way, up to complete realization, and should also apply it in the same way, up to thoroughly and completely teaching it. Maudgalyayana, in the past, in a time long before that, there was a sage named "Established in Dharma," who had great magical powers, great glory, great strength, and who, through external paths, was free from attachment to desires. He knew the outflows of desire, knew their origin, and thoroughly understood them as they truly are, like reflections in a mirror. Just as the appearance of form in a mirror is not seen, so too, knowing the outflows of desire and knowing their origin is not seen. Why? Because they are not truly existent. Any dharma that is not existent should not be abandoned, should not be completely understood, should not be meditated upon, and should not be realized. However, ignorant ordinary people who are not endowed with learning, seeking the qualities of desire, appear to engage in their forms. For example, if one properly examines the appearance of form in a mirror, one can manifest the five superknowledges. All dharmas are also like the center of a mirror.
