I, whatever scent exists in a container, exists in a root, exists in essence, exists without essence, exists in bark, exists in a stalk, exists in a leaf, exists in a flower, and exists in a fruit, this is called the scent realm. To that, there is knowing, seeing, clarity, manifest realization, and accurate understanding. Whoever is wise, this is called knowing the scent realm. The Tathagata knows this as it truly is. If someone were to ask the Tathagata about knowing the scent realm, answering from the beginning of the kalpa, until he enjoys this between the sandalwood cloisters and pavilions. Householder, how does the Tathagata truly know the arising of knowing the scent realm? Householder, the Tathagata knows this as follows: By generating roots of virtue in immeasurable Buddhas, the Bhagavat, the knowing of the scent realm, the knowledge of arising is truly accomplished. Householder, furthermore, by what cause and what condition does the Tathagata truly accomplish the arising of knowing the scent realm? The Tathagata truly knows those causes and conditions as they truly are. If one abides in contemplating impermanence, or if one abides in contemplating turning away, the Tathagata truly knows this as it truly is. If someone were to ask the Tathagata about knowing the arising of the scent realm, answering from the beginning of the kalpa, until he enjoys this between the sandalwood cloisters and pavilions. Householder, how does the Tathagata truly know the cessation of knowing the scent realm? Householder, the Tathagata knows this as follows: Having done benefit for immeasurable beings, having averted non-benefit, having made light, having dispelled darkness, having completely liberated immeasurable beings from suffering, and having placed them in happiness, this is the cessation of knowing the scent realm, and this is also the nature of the Dharma that has not been born from the beginning. Householder, thus the Tathagata knows the scent realm

He fully knows the cessation of consciousness as it is. The Tathagata knows the cessation of the realm of olfactory consciousness, and when asked about it again, starting from answering in kalpas, apply it in the same way. He answers even up to unspeakable and unspeakable kalpas, and his eloquence is inexhaustible. He will enjoy himself in this sandalwood courtyard and pavilion. Householder, how does the Tathagata know the path to the cessation of the realm of olfactory consciousness, and fully knows it as it is? Householder, here, the Tathagata fully knows with what consciousness the realm of olfactory consciousness is fully known, understood, and directly realized, and he also fully knows the cessation of that consciousness as it is. The Tathagata says again, if one dwells contemplating the absence of taste, or if one dwells contemplating faults, or if one dwells contemplating definite departure, the Tathagata fully knows it as it is. The Tathagata knows the path to the cessation of the realm of olfactory consciousness, and when asked about it again, starting from answering in kalpas, apply it in the same way. He will enjoy himself in this sandalwood courtyard and pavilion. Householder, how does the Tathagata know the realm of nasal consciousness, and fully knows it as it is? Householder, here, the Tathagata knows it in this way: relying on the nose and smell, nasal consciousness arises. When the nature of distinguishing objects separately arises, it does not arise from the internal nose, nor does it come from the external smells. Holding in the middle, it does not abide, there is no coming or going, it is emptiness and devoid of self-nature. Here, what is consciousness, what is seeing, what is clarity, what is direct realization, what is true understanding, and what is wisdom, this is called knowing the realm of nasal consciousness, and the Tathagata fully knows it as it is. The Tathagata knows the realm of nasal consciousness, and when asked about it again, starting from answering in kalpas. He will enjoy himself in this sandalwood courtyard and pavilion.
