Are there no special medicines that do not change? He thought like this: All sentient beings dwell completely in me, intensely generating afflictions, and with the mind of affliction, they manifestly perform actions, thereby accomplishing various kinds of ripened results. Then, I should thoroughly seek what is the self of those dharmas. Thinking, am I form? If for a moment I appear as form, then when form increases and completely diminishes, when is it seen that I increase and completely diminish? It is not so, therefore I am not form. If feeling is me, then it will be happy in pleasant places, it will be painful in unpleasant places, and in neutral places it will be neither painful nor happy. My nature is not like that, therefore feeling is not me. If perception is me, then happiness will follow happy feelings, suffering will follow suffering feelings, and neither suffering nor happiness will follow feelings that are neither suffering nor happiness. Whatever follows another is not my nature, therefore perception is not me. If formation is me, then it has three aspects: virtuous, non-virtuous, and immovable. The ripened results of these three are happiness, suffering, and neither suffering nor happiness. Then, am I virtuous or non-virtuous? Or, the immovable I does not want to change. Therefore, formation is not me. If consciousness is me, then why does happiness follow happy feelings? Suffering follows suffering feelings? Neutrality follows feelings that are neither suffering nor happiness? I do not want to change, therefore consciousness is not me. He thought like this: All these five aggregates are without self and without what belongs to self. From afflictions arise actions, from actions arise ripened results,

From maturation arises affliction. I thought that the continuity of these three would not cease. Then, he arose from that samadhi and taught the Dharma to the four assemblies: Friends, there is no "I" or "mine" in this. If the conditions are present, actions will arise; if the conditions are not present, actions will not arise. As he taught the Dharma in this way, countless trillions of sentient beings attained forbearance of the Dharma of non-arising. Here, apart from these actions, no Dharma arises, is destroyed, or dies. For example, from afflictions arises karma, and from karma arises maturation. All these Dharmas are devoid of inherent nature, that is, afflictions are devoid of inherent nature, karma is devoid of inherent nature, and maturation is devoid of inherent nature. Son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? Do you think that the ascetic who was skilled in the extremes of external paths at that time was someone else? Do not view it that way, for I was the ascetic who was skilled in the extremes of external paths at that time. When I spoke such words about afflictions and karma, countless trillions of sentient beings attained forbearance of the Dharma of non-arising. Son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who desires to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment should train in the three classifications of karma. Son of Maudgalyayana, for the sake of knowing death and knowing the cessation of death, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, I thought: After I awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, how shall I truly teach sentient beings about knowing death and knowing the cessation of death? Thus, I accumulated vast and immeasurable roots of virtue. Son of Maudgalyayana, in the immeasurable past aeons, even beyond that, there was a sage named "Skilled in Knowing Death and Knowing the Cessation of Death," who had great magical powers, great splendor, and great strength, and who, through external paths, was free from attachment to desires and possessed five superknowledges. He knew with his mind all conditioned phenomena and the conditioned
