A king named Righteous Sage, the Divine Good, possessed great miraculous powers, great splendor, and great strength. He was detached from the desires of those who follow external paths and possessed the five supernormal cognitions. Then, King Righteous Sage, the Divine Good, went alone to a secluded place and, entering into perfect concentration, thought to himself: 'Here, I see beings dying, being born, being inferior, being superior, going to happy realms, and going to unhappy realms. What is the cause of this? What is the condition? By what means do these beings, after dying in one body, appear in what is called rebirth? Some are born in the hell realms, some in the realm of animals, some in the realm of Yama, some in the ranks of the Asuras, some in Brahma, some in the Kshatriya caste, some in the Brahmin caste, some in the Vaishya caste, some in the gods who are the kings of the Four Great Kings, some as powerful gods, some as those who enjoy the pleasures of the king of the gods, some in the Thirty-three, some in the Free from Strife, the Joyful, the Enjoying Emanation, and the Controlling Others' Emanations. Some die as humans and are born in Brahma, some in the Retinue of Brahma, the Ministers of Brahma, the Assembly of Brahma, and the Great Brahma. Likewise, from the Light, the Small Light, the Immeasurable Light, and the Clear Light up to the Well-appearing. Some are born in the Great, the Small Great, the Immeasurable Great, the Great Fruit, the Non-perceiving Beings, the Non-great, and the Non-afflicted, up to the gods of the Akanishtha. Some are born in the Realm of Limitless Space, some in the Realm of Limitless Consciousness, some in the Realm of Nothingness, and some in the gods of the Realm of Neither Perception nor Non-perception.' He thought to himself. He reflected thus: 'Other than the distinctions of afflictions, the distinctions of actions, and the distinctions of births, there is nothing else. If the cause of afflictions is manifest, then the cause of actions will be manifest, and the cause of actions will be born.' He thought to himself. He reflected thus: 'If there are no afflictions, then actions will not be performed, and if there is no performance of actions, then there will be no birth.' He thought to himself. He reflected thus: 'What is more peaceful or more excellent than this?' He contemplated in this way.

Having made faith and attention, the mind is extremely settled in the samadhi of cessation of perception and feeling. He has completely transcended all the spheres of neither perception nor non-perception, and approaches the samadhi of cessation of perception and feeling. He rises from that samadhi, exhales, and thinks that there must be a way to be liberated from this suffering. At that time, sitting among a large crowd, he demonstrates the samadhi of cessation of perception and feeling. Friends, if anyone knows such a samadhi, then he will not regress from the dharmas of a Bodhisattva, and even those who have not realized it will realize it. At that time, his fourfold retinue also became non-regressing from the unexcelled perfect enlightenment. Son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? At that time, the king at that time, named Righteous One, Good God, if you think that he is someone else, then you should not think like that, I am him. After I heard the samadhi of cessation of perception and feeling from the fourfold retinue, I became non-regressing. Son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, when a Bodhisattva practices the conduct of a Bodhisattva, he should contemplate liberation from all actions. A Bodhisattva who contemplates liberation from all actions, even if he has karmic obscurations as great as Mount Sumeru, can eliminate, destroy, disintegrate, and pacify them with a single moment of aspiration. Son of Maudgalyayana, in order to know and see the cessation of knowing the future limits, I have been like this from the past when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva until the present enlightenment. Son of Maudgalyayana, in the immeasurable eons of the past, on the other side of that, even further beyond, there was a great righteous one, named Brahman, Lord of the Gods, who had great magical powers, great splendor, and great power, and who, by other non-Buddhist paths, was free from desire for the desire realm. He dwelt in the first dhyana and attained the five superknowledges. He thought to himself: If I dwell in the first dhyana, then I will be able to attain liberation from all actions. He thought to himself: This first dhyana has a taste to be savored, and has
