He manifestly gathered various immeasurable roots of virtue. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, from immeasurable eons ago, beyond that, even further beyond, there was a sage named "Skilled in Stopping Places," who did not abide in existence, the bonds of wandering, and all births. He thought to himself, "Alas, all these sentient beings are afflicted because they do not know the nature of phenomena. They cling to phenomena that are without nature, and thus grasp the cause of their own suffering. Because they grasp the cause of their own suffering, they themselves experience suffering." Thinking this, he realized all phenomena that are without nature and fully understood the cause of manifestation and activity. Having fully understood the cause of manifestation and activity, he increased the cause of knowledge and completely cut off the cause of ignorance. He entered into completely cutting off all non-virtuous dharmas, and also entered into increasing virtuous dharmas. He fully matured countless trillions of sentient beings in knowing the place, knowing the arising. Maudgalyayana's son, what do you think? Do you think that the sage named "Skilled in Stopping Places" at that time was someone else? Do not view it that way, for I was him. I fully matured those immeasurable sentient beings in knowing the place, knowing the arising. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva should be skilled in fully maturing the knowing of the place, knowing the arising. A Bodhisattva who is skilled in knowing the place, knowing the arising, will quickly abide in the irreversible dharmas. Maudgalyayana's son, for the purpose of knowing the stopping place, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, after I attained complete and perfect enlightenment, I similarly accumulated immeasurable roots of virtue. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, from immeasurable eons ago, beyond that, even further beyond, there was a king named "Holder of the Earth," a Dharma king possessing Dharma, compassionate to sentient beings.

A peak appeared. He thought to himself: Why do these sentient beings experience endless suffering? Why will these beings become the liberation of the liberated ones? He fully understood the previous actions of those sentient beings. He saw some sentient beings whose bodies were burned extremely hot by all-consuming flames, running around and uttering cries of agony. He saw some sentient beings tormented by flocks of birds, uttering cries of agony and running around. He saw some sentient beings being eaten by worms, uttering cries of agony and running around. He saw some sentient beings enveloped in stench, uttering cries of agony and running around. He thought to himself: Due to attachment to places and the accumulation of actions, these sentient beings experience all kinds of suffering. He saw with his eyes those sentient beings dwelling properly in inappropriate places, and he truly pointed out to them the faults of those places, saying: Because you like to truly look at my places with joy, you have accumulated these sinful actions because of your liking for me. Because of accumulating these actions, your bodies are burning everywhere and you are running around. Tormented by flocks of birds, running around. Eaten by swarms of worms, running around. Enveloped in stench, running around. Because they each crave their own bodies, they have not obtained the slightest happiness except for truly generating suffering. Because of their individual attachments, they have accumulated these sinful actions. They are experiencing these ripening results. You should keep the perception of impermanence close to your bodies. You should also keep the perception of non-attachment close. You should also keep the perception of impurity close, and that would be excellent. Through teaching this Dharma, countless sentient beings attained the state of non-retrogression. Maudgalyayana's son, what do you think? Do you think that the king named Holder of the Earth at that time was someone else? You should not look at it that way, I at that time

The king named Sana became the holder of the earth. I released countless beings from holding and firmly established them in the state of non-retrogression. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva should train in non-holding. A Bodhisattva who trains in non-holding will quickly attain the state of non-retrogression. Maudgalyayana's son, I, in order to know the path that prevents the knowledge of places, from the practice of a Bodhisattva to the manifestation of aggregation, and to the correct and complete demonstration (of it). Maudgalyayana's son, in the distant past, there was a king named Righteous Sage who knew existence and enlightenment, who possessed actions, knew everything, knew feelings, knew the feeler, knew formations, knew distinctions, knew virtue, knew what is with faults and without faults, knew actions, and learned the worldly crafts and occupations other than these. He thought to himself: What craft, when learned, has no birth, no destruction, no death, no displeasure, can be correctly and completely trained, and is there a craft that is separate from displeasure? When he thought separately in this way, he did not find any craft, learning which there is no birth, no destruction, no death, no arising. He thought to himself: All these actions are like the vessels of a potter, and beings also do not exist, and death is also known. If beings do not manifest aggregation, there will be no death and no birth. At that time, he attained such a samadhi of mind, and just as the mind remained in equanimity, he remembered the different bodies of beings. He remembered the different self-essences of each being as numerous as the dust particles of a Buddha-field. He remembered all the causes and conditions by which the self-essence was formed, and he remembered all the objects by which the different self-essences were formed. He thought to himself: What does not cause the self-essence to manifest and accomplish?
