If one clings to that, one is submerged in oneself, and one manifestly clings to the selfless dharmas as self. Because of manifestly clinging to that as self, one thinks of it as suffering. One thinks of it as pure and permanent. In whatever dharma there is nothing, that is selfless, impermanent, unpleasant, and impure, having obtained these tolerances, for countless eons, one has never manifestly clung to self. He liberated countless sentient beings from manifestly clinging to self and firmly established them in emptiness. Maudgalyāyana's son, what do you think? Do you think that the ascetic who was called 'extremely leading' at that time was someone else? You should not look at it that way. Why is that? At that time, I was the ascetic called 'extremely leading'. I liberated those sentient beings from the perception of self and firmly established them in emptiness. Maudgalyāyana's son, to the extent that the Tathāgata, in this way, when they awaken to complete perfect enlightenment in the equality of all dharmas, ordinary beings who are not endowed with hearing think of self. They think of it as permanent and pure. Look at how one's own self is connected with the accumulation of suffering. For example, just as a silkworm wraps itself around itself and burns and blazes with fire, it is burned by the very silk that has arisen from itself. Similarly, the childish ordinary person is burned by the accumulation of suffering that has arisen from himself. Maudgalyāyana's son, therefore, a bodhisattva regards the performance of actions as bondage. He who manifestly clings to and is completely attached to that fire burns sentient beings. When they are burned, sentient beings are burned by the obscuration of ignorance, and being truly connected, they do not know the previous limit. A bodhisattva who is skilled in manifest clinging and complete attachment does not turn back and quickly attains the nature of dharma. Maudgalyāyana's son, in order to know the place and to know the arising, when I practiced the conduct of a bodhisattva in the past, after I awakened to unsurpassed complete perfect enlightenment, I thought, 'How should I truly and thoroughly explain to sentient beings the knowledge of the place and the knowledge of the arising?'
