From what is the transformation of consciousness obtained? He thought to himself: It is not from non-fabrication. If it were not fabrication, even if it did not become different, how could it be like the cause of fabrication? He thought to himself: It is not from ignorance and craving. Because of craving, one fabricates, but one does not fully understand those faults. If craving ceases, karma ceases to be fabricated, and consciousness also cannot be fully understood. Therefore, the wise should manifest the light of wisdom. A Bodhisattva who manifests the light of wisdom abides in the state of non-retrogression. Maudgalyayana, what do you think? At that time, if you think that the king, the righteous one who understands knowledge, was someone else, you should not think that way. Why? Because I was that king, the righteous one who understood knowledge, at that time. Maudgalyayana, therefore, a Bodhisattva should understand knowledge. A Bodhisattva who understands the knowledge of things abides in the state of non-retrogression. Maudgalyayana, in order for me to understand the future limit, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, I thought, how can I attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and after becoming a Buddha, how can I truly teach the knowledge of the future limit to sentient beings? So I accumulated immeasurable roots of virtue. Maudgalyayana, in the immeasurable past eons, far, far beyond that, there was a chief named Honest Wisdom, who was skilled in resolving the disputes of sentient beings. He could fully understand the thoughts of all sentient beings merely by their words, knowing which statements would be victorious and which would not. His bodily and mental conduct was extremely beautiful, and merely seeing him would captivate the eyes of sentient beings. The chief, Honest Wisdom, arose to benefit sentient beings and went alone to a solitary place, entering into inner samadhi. Having obtained such a samadhi of the mind, how can one abide in equanimity of mind?

Thus, he obtained the divine eye. With the divine eye, he saw beings dying, being born, and being born in good and bad destinies. He thought, 'What is the Dharma that goes from this world to the other world?' But he did not determine that what goes from this world to the other world is this. He thought, 'The nature of these Dharmas is like the moon in water. For example, when the moon appears in water, various consciousnesses also appear in the halo of the water moon. Similarly, all these Dharmas are like the moon in water. There is no transfer of Dharmas, but various consciousnesses also appear in the other world. I think there is not even a little bit of the karma of transferring from this world to the other world here.' At that time, people placed all the Dharmas like the moon in water into it and arranged them. After those people realized all the Dharmas like the moon in water, they dwelt in the Dharma of non-retrogression. Son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? Do you think that the leader named Upright Wisdom at that time was someone else? You should not think like that. At that time, I was the leader named Upright Wisdom. I placed countless millions of beings in the state of non-retrogression. All those Bodhisattvas purified the Buddha-fields, worked for the benefit of countless beings, and placed countless beings in the state of non-retrogression. They completely passed into Nirvana in the realm of Nirvana without remainder. Son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, Bodhisattvas should believe that all Dharmas are like the nature of the moon in water. Bodhisattvas who believe that all Dharmas are like the nature of the moon in water will quickly attain the ground of non-retrogression. Son of Maudgalyayana, in order to know the arising of all that knows the later limit, I combined it in this way from the accumulation of immeasurable roots of virtue when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past. Son of Maudgalyayana, from countless eons in the past, at that time, on the far shore of the far shore.
