He spoke such words as these. If someone wishes to accomplish diligence, wisdom, understanding of all, and knowledge of all through the path of ease, then they should realize it through the middle path. For example, with regard to the limbs of enlightenment, whether it is the right time or not, one should cultivate the limbs of enlightenment with unwavering diligence. One should cultivate the limb of enlightenment of discriminating dharma. One should abandon the limb of enlightenment of discriminating dharma. One should cultivate the limb of enlightenment of joy. One should abandon the limb of enlightenment of concentration. And one should examine it with mindfulness. To think of beings with happiness, one should also have delicious food, live comfortably, and the body will become light. By initiating the practice of diligence, one is separated from suffering. Through intermediate wisdom, one will surely attain happiness. At that time, King Grakzang (Grags bzang) revered those teachings and, through hearing, diligence, wisdom, understanding of all, and knowledge of all, attained forbearance of the unborn dharma. Maudgalyayana's son, what do you think? Do you think that the king named Grakzang at that time was someone else? You should not think that way. Why? Because I was the king named Grakzang at that time. After the Blessed One spoke these words, the venerable great Maudgalyayana's son said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, we understand it this way: when the Tathagata Dipamkara attained forbearance of the unborn dharma, how should we understand the meaning of this statement? The Blessed One said: Maudgalyayana's son, by the power of beings, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, make the Dharma understandable. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva who wishes to accomplish diligence, wisdom, understanding of all, and knowledge of all should strive and realize diligence in equality. With regard to diligence, wisdom, understanding of all, and knowledge of all, one should also distinguish dharmas and distinguish wealth. Maudgalyayana's son, for the sake of my knowing the cessation of diligence and wisdom, in the past, the Bodhisattva's

When practicing generosity, thinking about how to obtain diligence and knowledge of obstacles in order to benefit beings like myself, I accumulated countless roots of virtue. Just like Maudgalyayana's son in the past, similarly connecting, in the far distant past, from the Tathagata named "Believing in Mara" up to the Buddha Bhagavan, they appeared in the world. In the Buddha-field of that Tathagata named "Believing in Mara," there appeared one named "Holding Mara's Power," who performed Mara's deeds on the teachings of five hundred Buddhas. For those Tathagatas, remembering their deaths and births in the stream of existence, and holding onto the bonds in those samsaras. He also performed Mara's deeds on those Tathagatas' dwelling and complete nirvana. By creating obstacles for those Tathagatas, the Shravakas of the Tathagatas, and the individual teachings of the Tathagatas, he fell into lower realms for countless eons. That Tathagata "Believing in Mara" also wanted to create obstacles for the teachings of the Tathagata who was about to attain enlightenment. Then, the Bodhisattva "Believing in Mara" was dwelling at the Bodhi tree, and "Holding Mara's Power" remembered his previous lives. Seeing those roots of virtue of "Holding Mara's Power," and the kind of miraculous manifestations he displayed, remembering the bonds that "Holding Mara's Power" had made to those Tathagatas in the past, remembering which beings were born in the great scorching hells because of this, and remembering which beings became the cause of the great scorching hells. He felt fear and dread, his hair stood on end, and he developed renunciation. Having developed renunciation, he developed great joy and faith in that Bodhisattva, and then the Bodhisattva "Believing in Mara" spoke this verse to him: Possessing great wisdom and immeasurable knowledge, compassionate one who does good deeds! Doing good deeds for all beings in the world, Sugata, I take refuge in you! Just as a sword is not in its sheath, leaping upwards in an instant, so am I.
