Completely placed in various kinds of knowledge. Son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? At that time, the one named Brahman Independent God, who became like a great Sala tree, do you think he is someone else? You should not see it that way, I was, at that time, the one named Brahman Independent God, who became like a great Sala tree. I completely placed countless millions of beings in various kinds of knowledge. At that time, I was endowed with wisdom and fully understood the knowledge of strength and non-strength. Now also, after fully awakening to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, I have fully comprehended the knowledge of strength and non-strength of all sentient beings. There is no one like me there, who can roar the lion's roar in the assembly? Son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, the Bodhisattva should strive diligently to understand the strength and non-strength of others. One should also especially admire all the teachings that are spoken. Son of Maudgalyayana, in order to understand the knowledge of strength and the obstruction, in the past, when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I thought, how should I understand the order of the arising of the strength of all sentient beings, and thus I accumulated countless kinds of roots of virtue. Son of Maudgalyayana, in the past, from countless eons ago, in that far beyond, there was a king named Meshabhinda, who was skilled in understanding the sounds of all beings and contemplated their meaning. He fully understood the meaning of whatever sound he heard. If this sound is heard, he would know why it expresses meaning, why it expresses the meaning of time. Some would express, and some would not express. In this way, strength and non-strength accompany all knowledge. For all actions, after doing the action of this knowledge, has it stopped? Or has it not stopped? Or has it stopped after doing a little bit of action? Has it not done even a little bit? How long will this person become a vessel of knowledge? How long will he be able to pacify afflictions? He understood so certainly that he became the teacher of all knowledge in the entire Jambudvipa. Son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think?

At that time in that life, if you think that the king named Mesbyin was someone else, you should not think that way. I, at that time in that life, became the king named Mesbyin, knowing the sounds of all beings, knowing the meaning of all treatises. By that very root of virtue, I fully knew all sounds, knew the sequence of all treatises, and thus attained the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva should be skilled in all treatises, and should also be skilled in the meaning of all treatises. Maudgalyayana's son, in order to know the path that prevents the knowledge of power, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, I thought: How should I fully know the path that prevents the knowledge of the power and non-power of sentient beings? Then, I accumulated various immeasurable roots of virtue. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, in the bygone era, there was a sage named Lightly Wise, who possessed asceticism, austerity, merit, and wisdom. His asceticism was wearing five tufts of hair, and so on, there were countless kinds of asceticism. He diligently dwelled in the forest of austerity, and he exhausted the afflictions of attending to cold and heat, eating burnt things, and not caring for the body. So on, there were countless other kinds of austerity. The characteristics of his merits were these: He was very careful not to harm living beings. He had no intention of going to other women. He abstained from drinking alcohol, had no mental confusion, did not leave austerity, guarded the minds of others, completely guarded harsh words, relied on all knowers, and remembered the sages of the past. So on, he also possessed countless other characteristics of merit. The characteristics of his wisdom were these: For example, knowing the forms of magical powers, knowing the divine ear, knowing the minds of others, and knowing past abodes.
