I also completely abandoned countless excellent pleasures. Again, I became attached to sound. Because of my attachment to sound, I made offerings to the Tathagata's stupa with various kinds of musical sounds, but that did not completely satisfy me. Again, I became attached to smell. Because of my attachment to smell, I offered many smells, but that did not completely satisfy me. Again, I became attached to taste. Because of my attachment to taste, I offered many kinds of grains and various kinds of taste distinctions, but that did not completely satisfy me. Again, I became attached to touch. Because of my attachment to touch, I offered various kinds of soft clothes, but that did not completely satisfy me. Maudgalyayana's son, because I was attached to the Dharma, I learned various kinds of knowledge, but those did not completely satisfy me. Maudgalyayana's son, whoever is attached to Nirvana, there is no falling away from that attachment. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should learn about various kinds of attachments, and should also observe that all attachments are of the nature of cessation. Maudgalyayana's son, in order for me to know the path that will cause the cessation of various kinds of attachment knowledge, I accumulated countless kinds of roots of virtue. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, immeasurable eons ago, even further beyond that, a Tathagata named Dharma Cloud Rain appeared in the world, surrounded by countless assemblies of Shravaka-yana, Pratyekabuddha-yana, and Bodhisattva-yana. At that time, in that assembly, there was a Bodhisattva named Earth Holder, who possessed immeasurable Bodhisattva qualities, had sharp faculties, and with each thought he generated, he accumulated roots of virtue for countless eons. With each thought he generated, he firmly established countless beings in the Shravaka-yana. Similarly, he established them in the Pratyekabuddha-yana. Similarly, with each thought he generated, he firmly established countless millions of Bodhisattvas in the irreversible stage. At that time, countless millions of beings were firmly established in the Shravaka-yana. Mind

Countless millions of beings abide in the vehicle of the Pratyekabuddhas. Countless millions of beings abide in the vehicle of the Bodhisattvas. Then, the Bodhisattva Earth Holder thought: Alas, the Tathagata pours down the rain of the clouds of Dharma, and the Blessed One has prophesied that those beings will surely arise. May their respective retinues rejoice upon hearing the prophecy. Then, the Tathagata poured down the rain of the clouds of Dharma and prophesied to those beings as they wished. Maudgalyayana's son, do you think that the Bodhisattva Earth Holder at that time was someone else? Do not view it that way, for I was the Bodhisattva Earth Holder at that time. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, those beings who truly abide in the vehicle of the Bodhisattvas should be completely embraced. Maudgalyayana's son, in order to understand various inclinations, I accumulated countless roots of virtue while practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, countless eons ago, beyond that, even further beyond, there appeared in the world a Tathagata named Near Peaceful Victory, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, unsurpassed Trainer of beings, Teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Blessed One. In that Buddha-field of the Tathagata Near Peaceful Victory, there was a Bodhisattva named Jewel Holder, who had long practiced pure conduct towards countless Tathagatas, filled with countless roots of virtue, and obtained great compassion, and he became the attendant of that Tathagata. He pleased that Tathagata, did not do what was displeasing, served as an attendant, and also upheld the teachings, and did not abandon his own benefit. He served as the attendant of the Blessed One, and by cultivating the five superknowledges, he became skilled in the minds of others. Blessed One, in the mind of that Tathagata Near Peaceful Victory
