In order to know the cessation of consciousness, when a Bodhisattva of the past practiced, he accumulated countless kinds of roots of virtue. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, countless eons ago, on the far shore of that, there was one named "Following the Appearance of All Beings," who was of good form, beautiful, pleasing to the eye, and possessed excellent and flourishing colors. Whichever man he followed, he accumulated immeasurable roots of virtue in that very place. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, countless eons ago, on the far shore of that, there was a captain named "Loving All Beings," who possessed all the equipment and entered the great ocean with five hundred merchants. When they reached the middle of the ocean, a makara swallowed the ship, and the ship entered its mouth. Then, those merchants bowed and wept to whichever gods they believed in and admired. Some prayed to Shiva, some to Skanda, some to Maheśvara, some to Indra, some to the water gods, some to Prajāpati, some to Brahmā, some to Śrī, some to the sun, some to the moon, and some bowed to the great ocean itself. Some sat without saying a word, thinking, "We have no refuge, it is better to die." But none of them were saved. Then, the captain, loving all beings, thought, "Alas, all these merchants rely on wrong refuges, they perceive non-refuges as refuges, and are addicted to wrong views. From this wrong view, following the appearance of all beings, it seems as if he is truly showing himself, but in reality, he does not show his nature to anyone." Maudgalyayana's son, similarly, if one contemplates all conditioned things as they are, then one will see that all things are without essence. There is no certainty in conditioned things. If one desires purity, one should abandon the sign of purity and rely on the sign of impurity. Similarly,

Connect them. Abandon the characteristics and rely on the absence of characteristics, for this is the path to liberation. Maudgalyayana's son, in order for me to understand the devotion to various realms, permanence is bondage, and impermanence is liberation. Self is bondage, and non-self is liberation. Characteristics are bondage, and the absence of characteristics is liberation. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, if a Bodhisattva wishes to completely transcend suffering, and also wishes to completely liberate sentient beings from suffering, then they should manifest a pure color. If they completely perceive it as impure, they should manifest an impure color. If they perceive it as happiness, or as suffering, or as permanence, or as impermanence, or as self, or as non-self, or as characteristics, or as the absence of characteristics, they should manifest the color of the absence of characteristics. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, perceiving purity as bondage, and perceiving impurity as liberation. Perceiving happiness as bondage, and perceiving suffering as liberation. Connect them in this way. They became afflicted. They thought, 'I must be liberated from these afflictions.' At that time, the Tathagata named 'Destroyer of All Darkness' appeared in the world. The caravan leader, who had compassion for all beings, as soon as he heard this, immediately developed faith. He said to those merchants, 'None of you who believe in all these protectors can become a true protector, so come here. I am going to take refuge in the one I am approaching, so take refuge in him.' They said, 'Who are you going to take refuge in?' He said, 'Friends, the Tathagata named 'Destroyer of All Darkness' is there, I am going to take refuge in him, come here. Go and pay homage to the Tathagata 'Destroyer of All Darkness', take refuge. All of you must be firm in your minds and recite the words, 'I prostrate to the Tathagata 'Destroyer of All Darkness'.' All of them, terrified by the fear of death, generated supreme faith and recited the words, 'I prostrate to the Tathagata 'Destroyer of All Darkness'.' That crocodile, having heard the Buddha's voice, found it pleasing to the ear.
