Do not see it that way, the Tathagata Light Protector became King Good Thoughts at that time. Maudgalyayana, what do you think? Do you think that the one who became King Fearful Master at that time was someone else? Do not see it that way, why is that? I became King Fearful Master at that time, therefore, because I was certain about the knowledge of liberation, I obtained forbearance of the unarisen Dharma. Maudgalyayana, therefore, in order to realize the arising of the knowledge of liberation, the Bodhisattva should attend to and respect the virtuous friend, and should also be of a nature to ask questions. Maudgalyayana, once a Bodhisattva has entered the hands of a virtuous friend, he will quickly become irreversible from unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Maudgalyayana, in order to understand the cessation of the knowledge of liberation, when the Bodhisattva practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, he thought: After I have realized the knowledge of the cessation of peaceful liberation, how should I truly explain it to sentient beings? Then he manifestly accumulated various kinds of virtuous roots. Maudgalyayana, in the past, before immeasurable cycles of existence, even far beyond that, there was a king named Renowned Exalted, who generated virtuous roots towards immeasurable Tathagatas, performed superior deeds, practiced pure conduct for a long time, and possessed immeasurable qualities of a Bodhisattva. He searched day and night in the world for any renunciates or Brahmins who thoroughly understood how to be liberated from cyclic existence. At that time, the Tathagata Dharma Cloud Manifested Sound appeared in the world, and he resided in the royal palace called Extremely Subdued. The abode of all those people whose minds were extremely subdued and who were perfectly established in the Great Vehicle were perfect pleasure gardens, perfect groves, and perfect rivers.

King Renowned Victory heard that the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha, the Cloud of Dharma, was manifestly proclaimed to reside and dwell in the King's Palace of Utmost Subjugation, and that he fully knew that he would surely be liberated from samsara. Having heard this, sixty thousand chariots and ninety-six kotis of people came out of the King's Palace of Utmost Subjugation, and with the King's great miraculous power and the King's great might, they went to the garden of the Cloud Grove, where the voice of the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Cloud of Dharma, was manifestly proclaimed to reside. 布施以及罗刹等，未能寻得您，贤者所证悟之道。超越世间极明耀，恒河沙数诸众生，以何引导令趣入，即以彼道而逝去。此后，国王名声高扬者以世尊如来法云显明宣说之妙音，以偈颂而显明赞叹之善根，九十俱胝劫未堕恶趣。莫德嘎拉雅那之子，您作何思？彼时彼刻，名为国王名声高扬者，于一切系缚皆得解脱者，您若认为彼是他人，则您不应如是观，我即彼时彼刻名为国王名声高扬者。以彼善根，我九十俱胝劫未堕恶趣。如今，我亦通达解脱之智，通达止息之智。莫德嘎拉雅那之子，是故菩萨欲现证通达解脱之智，通达止息之智，当于一切所执皆无染著而得解脱。莫德嘎拉雅那之子，我为通达解脱之智，通达止息之道，往昔行菩萨行时，我如是思：我当于无上正等菩提现证成佛后，如何为众生如实开示？如是，我现前积聚种种无量善根。莫德嘎拉雅那之子，往昔过去无量劫前，于彼之彼岸，复于极彼岸，有如来应供正等觉，名曰义成逝，乃至佛世尊出现于世。彼如来应供正等觉义成逝之声闻众初会有一万。菩萨众之集会乃彼之二倍。声闻众之二会，从声闻阿罗汉广增至一千万。菩萨众之二会乃彼之二倍。声闻众之三会，声闻众有一百俱胝。

Generosity and even demons did not find the path that you, the capable one, have attained. Supremely clear is the transcendence of the world. By what means do you guide the beings, numerous as the sands of the Ganges, to enter? They have departed by that path. Then, King Renowned Glory, with the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the voice proclaiming the cloud of Dharma, with verses praised that root of virtue, and did not fall into lower realms for ninety trillion kalpas. Maudgalyayana's son, what do you think? Do you think that the one called King Renowned Glory, who was completely liberated from all attachments at that time, was someone else? You should not think like that. I was the one called King Renowned Glory at that time. By that root of virtue, I did not fall into lower realms for ninety trillion kalpas. Even now, I understand liberation, I understand cessation. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, Bodhisattvas who wish to fully realize the knowledge of liberation and the knowledge of cessation should be without attachment and liberated from all clinging. Maudgalyayana's son, in order to understand the path that leads to the knowledge of liberation and cessation, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, I thought, 'How should I perfectly enlighten beings after I have perfectly awakened to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment?' Thus, I accumulated various immeasurable roots of virtue. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, countless eons ago, beyond that shore, and even far beyond that, a Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly enlightened Buddha named Meaningful Departure appeared in the world, up to the Buddha, the Blessed One. The first gathering of the Shravakas of that Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly enlightened Buddha Meaningful Departure was ten thousand. The gathering of Bodhisattvas was twice that number. The second gathering of Shravakas, from Shravaka Arhats, greatly increased to ten million. The second gathering of Bodhisattvas was twice that number. The third gathering of Shravakas was one hundred trillion Shravakas.
