In a distant land, there appeared a teacher named 'Good Eyes.' He saw that the desire realm was harmed by the faults of desire, the form realm was harmed by the faults of form, and the formless realm was harmed by the faults of the formless. He thought to himself, 'Alas, these sentient beings have no protector, no guide, and are harmed by whatever they dwell in. I should not dwell in all conditioned things, for without dwelling, there will be no wavering.' He possessed the meditation of non-dwelling in all dharmas, thereby attaining great compassion for sentient beings. Having comprehended this wisdom, he truly and thoroughly revealed it to sentient beings. Through the Dharma he taught, countless sentient beings were placed in unobstructed wisdom, and attained the non-abiding complete Nirvana. Maudgalyayana's son, what do you think? Do you think that the teacher 'Good Eyes' at that time was someone else? You should not view it that way. Why? Because I was that teacher 'Good Eyes' at that time, and I taught the way to liberation from desire. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva should practice the Dharma of arising and ceasing. Maudgalyayana's son, in order to know liberation, I accumulated immeasurable roots of virtue when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, immeasurable eons ago, beyond even that, there was a Tathagata named 'Giver of Breath.' He bestowed breath upon the world of gods and asuras, a world afflicted by old age and sickness, and taught the Dharma to transcend old age and sickness, so that sentient beings liberated from old age and sickness would become fearless. He does not cling to things that are clung to, does not hate things that are hated, does not become deluded by things that are deluded, does not cling to meditations, does not cling to the spheres of exhaustion, does not cling to gradual attainments. His mind is completely liberated, utterly completely liberated, and this is called the wisdom of liberation. He is liberated.

Having realized those eight liberations, he taught the Dharma. At that time, there arose a king named "Subduing All Enemies," who was the lord of the three-thousand great-thousand world realm. He, together with a large assembly of people and sixty thousand minor kingdom kings, went to where the Blessed One, the Tathagata Who Bestows Breath, was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Tathagata Who Bestows Breath and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the Blessed One, the Tathagata Who Bestows Breath, taught the eight liberations to the king Subduing All Enemies. Having heard the eight liberations, he filled the three-thousand great-thousand world realm with the seven precious things and offered them, and then, together with those minor kingdom kings, he renounced the household life and went forth into homelessness. There, those sixty thousand minor kingdom kings directly realized the eight liberations, except for the king Subduing All Enemies. Son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? Do you think that the king Subduing All Enemies at that time was someone else? You should not think that way, for I was the king Subduing All Enemies at that time. Therefore, having heard the eight liberations, I do not abide in all existence. Due to great compassion for all sentient beings, including those of existence, going, death, and birth, I have remained in cyclic existence for eighteen countless eons, and I have contemplated the benefit of the beings in cyclic existence. Son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, a Bodhisattva should not abide. Son of Maudgalyayana, a Bodhisattva who does not abide in all samadhis will quickly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Seventeenth fascicle. Son of Maudgalyayana, in order to know the origin of my knowledge of liberation, in the past, when I was practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, how did I completely liberate my mind from all attachments to the clinging to fearful places? Thinking of becoming liberated and knowing all liberations,
