Beyond the extreme of the world, there is a Tathagata named Place of Peace. From there to the Buddha Bhagavan, he appeared in the world. The lifespan of that Tathagata Place of Peace was seventy billion trillion years. The first gathering of Shravakas of that Tathagata Place of Peace, from Arhats to those who have gone beyond all mental powers, numbered ten thousand Shravakas. His first gathering of Bodhisattvas numbered eighty. The second gathering of Shravakas, from Arhats who have exhausted defilements to those who have gone beyond all mental powers, numbered ninety billion trillion Shravakas. The gathering of Bodhisattvas was twice that number, and all of them were perfectly established in the Mahayana, until the Buddha-field was completely purified and possessed immeasurable and limitless qualities. By this means, the gathering of Shravakas and the gathering of Bodhisattvas of that Tathagata appeared immeasurably. At that time, in that Buddha-field of that Tathagata, there was a Bodhisattva named Peaceful Abiding Reverence. He developed reverence for peaceful abiding by following the way that Tathagata resided. Furthermore, by serving and honoring the Buddhas of the past, he became endowed with a similar excellent vision. When he obtained the excellent vision of peaceful abiding, with a mind overwhelmed by great compassion, he obtained the knowledge of the arising of all meditative knowledge. With skillful means, he neither clung to peaceful abiding nor relied on excellent vision. He manifested miraculous powers and emanated a thousand emanations. Those who were scattered in various realms, he gathered them with generosity. Having gathered them with generosity, he established them in morality. Having established them in morality, he fully taught the Dharma of the Buddhas. There, countless trillions of sentient beings were established in patience for this profound Dharma. They will correctly grasp the excellent knowledge of the Holy Dharma, and their body and mind will increase. They were also established in great compassion, and also established in the past meditations. Through long-term familiarity with omniscient wisdom, they were also established in the six perfections.

Then, not long after, in a completely pure Buddha-field, having attained the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and having perfectly awakened, he will completely liberate countless beings from suffering, and cause them to be completely liberated. Son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? If you think that the Bodhisattva Peaceful Abiding Reverence at that time was someone else, do not think that way, for I was the Bodhisattva Peaceful Abiding Reverence at that time. Therefore, I have perfected the six perfections through the habit of meditation. Wherever the perfection of generosity is, there it becomes the six perfections, and all six perfections are completely perfected. If a Bodhisattva acts in this way, it should be known as skillful means and non-retrogression. Son of Maudgalyayana, in order to know the arising of all meditative wisdom, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, how should I truly reveal to sentient beings the arising of all meditative wisdom? After hearing the faults of the land, thinking that I should proclaim it to sentient beings, I accumulated immeasurable roots of virtue. Son of Maudgalyayana, in the past, in a bygone era, there was a king named Delight in the Variety of the World. King Delight in the Variety of the World thought this: the more I delight in the variety of the world, the more I completely fall away from virtues, so I should abandon the country and go to the garden. Then, King Delight in the Variety of the World abandoned the kingdom and stayed in the garden. Staying in the garden, he perceived objects with his senses and abided in peace with the knowledge of tranquility. He thought to himself: what is it that arises from my recollection and attention to the Dharma, the knowledge of the arising of all meditative wisdom? He thought: I have made those who enter into meditation rejoice individually. With that root of virtue, I obtained the knowledge of the arising of all meditative wisdom. Remembering that root of virtue, he made the worldly food pleasing to those of good lineage who were greatly endowed with meditation. Mo

O son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? Do you think that the king named "Delighted in Various Worlds" at that time was someone else? Do not view it that way. I, at that time, became the king named "Delighted in Various Worlds." I gave alms of worldly food to those beings who were delighted in quiescence, and I increased the quiescence of those who diligently dwelt in quiescence. O son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, a Bodhisattva who wishes to awaken to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment should generously give the necessities of life to those meditators who are in harmony with quiescence. O son of Maudgalyayana, in order to know the cessation of meditative knowledge, in the past, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I accumulated countless kinds of virtuous roots. O son of Maudgalyayana, in the past, immeasurable eons ago, even further beyond, there appeared a sage named "Unobstructed Glorious One." He saw that whatever meditation arose, it had the nature of cessation. He knew that all forms of meditation had the nature of cessation, and he developed a fearless perception of all existence and transmigration. Therefore, he focused on ceasing the continuous flow of the non-abiding mind, and at the time of his death, he did not enter a womb for ninety-six kalpas, but was always continuously born through manifestation. O son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? Do you think that the one who became the sage named "Unobstructed Glorious One" at that time was someone else? Do not view it that way. I, at that time, became the sage named "Unobstructed Glorious One." At that time, I myself did not enter a womb for ninety-six kalpas. O son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, a Bodhisattva should cultivate the perception of ceasing all conditioned phenomena and should not be separated from it. O son of Maudgalyayana, in order to know the path that leads to the cessation of meditative knowledge, in the past, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I accumulated many kinds of virtuous roots. O son of Maudgalyayana, in the distant past, even further beyond,
