When these actions are practiced, various immeasurable roots of virtue are manifestly gathered. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, immeasurable eons ago, far beyond that shore, there was a being called "Following the Minds of All Beings," who subsisted on form, was beautiful in form, lovely and pleasing to behold, with excellent and abundant color, supremely endowed. Wherever that being went, he would follow the minds of all, but he would not show his own nature, nor would he leave any trace. Maudgalyayana's son, similarly, if all conditioned phenomena are examined individually, they are seen to be without substance, and none of the conditioned phenomena are definite. If one thinks of it as pure, it shows itself as a pure color; if one thinks of it as impure, it shows itself as an impure color. Similarly, if one thinks of it as pleasure, or as suffering, or as permanent, or as impermanent, or as having characteristics, or as without characteristics, it will show itself in that color. Maudgalyayana's son, thinking of it as pure is bondage, thinking of it as impure is liberation; thinking of it as pleasure is bondage, thinking of it as suffering is liberation. Similarly, thinking of it as permanent is bondage, thinking of it as impermanent is liberation; thinking of it as having self is bondage, thinking of it as without self is liberation; thinking of it as having characteristics is bondage, thinking of it as without characteristics is liberation. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who wishes to completely transcend suffering, and who also wishes to liberate sentient beings from suffering, should abandon the sign of purity and rely on the sign of impurity. Similarly, until one abandons signs and relies on the signless, that is the path to liberation. Maudgalyayana's son, how should a Bodhisattva learn to understand the world and to understand the arising of all phenomena? Maudgalyayana's son, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva wishes to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, he should rely on a virtuous friend and not abandon diligence. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, immeasurable eons ago, far beyond that shore

On the other side, a Bodhisattva named Light Righteous Victor, abiding in unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, accumulated roots of virtue towards the immeasurable Tathagata, and one endowed with various roots of virtue appeared. In his sleeping dreams, he saw nothing other than engaging in correct conversation with the Tathagata. How did he become intimate with the Tathagata here? At that time, a Tathagata named Unobstructed Manifestation appeared in the world, and the following conversation took place with the Tathagata Unobstructed Manifestation: "Bhagavan, how can the understanding of the world and the understanding of all arising be rightly accomplished? What is the proximate cause that can facilitate the understanding of the world and the understanding of all arising?" The Buddha replied: "Son of good family, you have embarked on benefiting many beings, and for the sake of benefiting many beings, you intend to ask the Tathagata about this matter, well done, well done. Son of good family, therefore listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain. The Bhagavan replied: "Yes, indeed," and then listened to the teachings of the Bhagavan. "Son of good family, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who wishes to fully awaken to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment should diligently study all treatises, and in order to understand their meaning, should also diligently practice. For example, for a Bodhisattva who practices these teachings and the ultimate meaning of past stories, one should learn the names of people, the names of villages, the names of places, and the names of where one goes. One should be skilled in all worldly knowledge. Son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? Do you think that the Bodhisattva Light Righteous Victor at that time was someone else? You should not think that way. Why? Because I was the Bodhisattva Light Righteous Victor at that time. Son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva

One should train in understanding the arising of all worldly knowledge. Maudgalyayana's son, in order to understand the arising of all worldly knowledge, in the past, when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I manifestly accumulated various kinds of virtuous roots. Maudgalyayana's son, in the immeasurable past aeons, even further beyond that, there was one named "Son of the Lord, Dispeller of Sorrow," who had made special offerings to the past victors. He thought to himself: I should fully understand the arising of all worldly knowledge, and then truthfully proclaim it. He thought to himself: In the world, which Shramana or Brahmin is there who truly understands the arising of all worldly knowledge as it is? I should inquire of him. At that time, the Tathagata named "Nectar Sweet Sound," up to the Buddha Bhagavan, appeared in the world. The Son of the Lord, Dispeller of Sorrow, was born in that Buddha-field of the Tathagata "Nectar Sweet Sound." Then, as soon as the Son of the Lord, Dispeller of Sorrow, was born, his old friend from the past, a compassionate deity, remained in the sky, manifested his body, and spoke in verses to that compassionate Son of the Lord: The world's protector, Nectar Sweet Sound, Possessing limitless splendor and ten powers, Performs immeasurable benefit for beings, Dispelling and cutting off beings' doubts. Like placing an Emblica fruit in the palm of the hand, Likewise, he sees the thoughts of gods and humans. Past, future, and present, He knows all these beings very well now. The Sugata, the place of offering for gods and humans, The sage, the protector, is compassionate to sufferings. He always knows the minds of beings, Like a gem appraiser knows the flaws of precious gems. Also like a wise one knows poison's harm, Likewise, the ten powers know beings' thoughts. After unequaled great compassion arises, Whichever person is born from the poison of desire, He lies down in extreme delusion and is healed. Whatever is born from the poison of fierce hatred, I will heal with love and medicine. The poison of intense ignorance.
