I should apply myself to the teachings. Whatever steals youth, alas, thoughts are deceived, and strength diminishes. In the moment of youth, impermanence and the decline of strength are not easy. In the moment of impermanent youth, it is not easy to fully examine. Therefore, when people possess youth, they should strive to exhaust old age. When youth is taken away by old age, and there is aging and decline, one cannot entrust oneself to the Dharma. Those who are skilled in the Buddha's teachings are seeking nectar. Just as fire does not burn when water is poured on it, so it cuts the noose of Mara. Therefore, when possessing youth, one should apply oneself to the teachings of the Sugata. By utilizing youth, one overcomes the forces of Mara. Son of Maudgalyayana, what do you think? At that time, do you think that the girl who became known as the "Heroine Who Walks" was someone else? You should not think that way, for at that time I became the dancer known as the "Heroine Who Walks." Son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, until the realm of aging and the sources of birth are completely destroyed, the wise should strive to take the nectar into their belly. Son of Maudgalyayana, in order to understand the various realms and to understand the obstruction, and so that the Dharma that I have fully understood may not be obstructed, I have manifestly accumulated countless roots of virtue. Son of Maudgalyayana, in the immeasurable past eons, far beyond that, there was a Tathagata named "Undiminished Fame." Among his scriptures was a scripture called "Supreme Bodhisattva Conduct," which possessed the quality of not wavering from vows. His vows were as follows: As long as the beings in my Buddha-field have not become vessels for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, I will not manifest unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. As long as all the beings born in my Buddha-field have not completely passed into nirvana through the swift and blissful path of clairvoyance, I will not manifest unsurpassed, perfect, and complete

I will not realize perfect enlightenment. Similarly, as long as all those beings born in my Buddha-field have not abandoned non-virtuous dharmas and are not endowed with all virtuous dharmas, then I will not realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. As long as all beings who have realized unsurpassed perfect enlightenment have not become irreversible from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, then I will not realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. If in my Buddha-field there is the sound of beings in hell, or the attainment of a place of birth as an animal, or birth in the world of Yama, or birth in the ranks of the Asuras, then I will not realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. If in my Buddha-field there is the sound of suffering, then I will not realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. If all those beings born in my Buddha-field have not all become celibate, then I will not realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, except for those who abide by the vows of Bodhisattvas. That Buddha-field also possesses other qualities like these. Maudgalyayana's son, do you think that the Bodhisattva named Superior Conduct who became such at that time was someone else? You should not see it that way, I was the one who became known as Superior Conduct at that time. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should firmly adhere to their vows for the benefit of sentient beings. Sixteenth fascicle. Manifestly assembled, Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, in the immeasurable eons of the past, and even far beyond that, there was a daughter of King Moon-giver, a daughter named Countless, who was beautiful and fair, pleasing to behold, with a good complexion, full and supremely endowed. Her parents had her preside over the household.
