At that time, if you think that the one named King Immeasurable Victory Banner was someone else, you should not think that way, for I was King Immeasurable Victory Banner at that time. Maudgalyayana, in order for me not to understand many realms, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, I truly accumulated immeasurable roots of virtue. Maudgalyayana, in the past, countless eons ago, in that even more distant past, there was one named Brahmin Victorious Holder, who was like a great Sala tree, intelligent, clear, and upright in mind, knowing the basis and skilled, he was of the nature of wisdom, and he also contemplated. He contemplated merits and faults, and entered into correct inner concentration in a solitary place, and in his mind, such complete reflection arose: From where does the root of faults arise? From where does the root of virtues arise? After thinking in that way, self-knowing wisdom that did not depend on others arose, and if the various afflictions that arise now are not prevented, one will be completely defiled by afflictions. If the afflictions that arise now are prevented, one will not be defiled by afflictions. If the virtuous dharmas that arise now are prevented, the white side will not increase. If the virtuous dharmas that arise now increase, the white side will increase, he thought. Then, Brahmin Victorious Holder, like a great Sala tree, truly distinguished and observed the arising of virtuous dharmas and the prevention of non-virtuous dharmas, and thus caused the arising of virtuous dharmas to truly increase, and abandoned the arising of non-virtuous dharmas. Abandoning non-virtuous dharmas and relying on virtuous dharmas, he attained samadhi. Because of attaining samadhi, he was able to permanently prevent all non-virtuous aspects, and greatly increase the arising of virtuous dharmas. He did that from then on, accumulated, reached the ultimate and perfection, and correctly upheld, therefore he did not fall into lower realms for eighty hundred thousand eons. Maudgalyayana, if you think that the one named Brahmin Victorious Holder, like a great Sala tree, at that time was someone else, you should not think that way, for I at that time

The Brahmin named Dhvajagra became like a great sala tree. In order to avert the cause of samsara and to properly increase the cause of nirvana, I served and questioned countless billions of Buddhas in those intervals. By that root of virtue, I have now abandoned the afflictions along with the connections of habitual tendencies, and have attained unobstructed wisdom regarding the Dharma. Having said this, the venerable Maudgalyāyana said to the Bhagavan: "O Bhagavan, from not being saddened, the Bhagavan has taken up the great armor of truth, and for the sake of sentient beings, the Bhagavan has attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, it is wonderful!" Having said this, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Maudgalyāyana: "Maudgalyāyana, it is so. Maudgalyāyana, the Tathagata has donned this great armor in order to turn sentient beings who follow the constant path away from the constant path. Maudgalyāyana, without protecting oneself, one cannot benefit others; only by disregarding one's body and life can one benefit others." Fifteenth fascicle. Maudgalyāyana, in the past, immeasurable eons ago, far beyond that, there was one named Chief Water Deity, who was the chief of peace for towns, cities, and villages, rich and with much wealth, with great enjoyment, possessing much enjoyment, possessing many things, having many substances and implements, wealthy and endowed with jewels, pearls, vaiḍūrya, conch shells, coral, agate, silver, and gold, intelligent and clear, with a generous mind and compassion, thinking of benefiting all sentient beings. At that time, in the peaceful towns and villages, there was also a king named Kinsman, a king of Dharma, endowed with Dharma. Disagreeing with him was a king named Fierce Deity, who was powerful and had a large army, and because of his power, he was not satisfied with his own kingdom and spied on the territories of others, deploying a fourfold army, he came to conquer the land of King Kinsman. Then, the

King Endowed with Wealth spoke to the ministers: "O chiefs of the city, King Fierce God, relying on strength, armies, and great forces, is not content with his own kingdom and is coming to seize my kingdom. O chiefs of the city, what should be done? Think about it!" Some of them said: "Courage must be aroused; if courage is aroused, perhaps they will be repelled." Some said this: "To completely protect the kingdom, wealth should be given; thus, the kingdom will be completely protected, and the purpose of the kingdom will truly flourish." Some said this: "Inner ministers and ministers should be won over; the inner ministers should exert themselves greatly." Some said this: "The assembly of troops should be properly gathered; the army should counterattack." Then, King Endowed with Wealth said to the city's chief deity, Water God: "Water God, know that King Fierce God, not content with his own kingdom, is coming to invade my victorious land. What should be done about this?" Having said this, the city's chief deity, Water God, said to King Endowed with Wealth: "Great King, for his sake, I will do what I must do; however much wealth he desires, I will give him that much. If he engages in the application of mantras, if he cannot be turned back by the power of mantras, he will lead an army." Then, in order to truly accomplish this, messengers were sent and elephants were given, but still he could not be turned back; the army itself came forth. Then, King Endowed with Wealth sent a messenger to the king who was not in harmony with him, saying: "What I ask of you is that I am content with my kingdom, and may you also be content with your own kingdom. May you and I be happy together, and I ask that you withdraw your troops." He also said this: "Life is short and one will pass away, so live on a single meal, live on a single set of clothes, live on a single set of bedding, and be happy with a single wife. Friend, understand it that way! What is it?"
