It is to avert the arisen afflictions. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, one should learn to abandon the afflictions that arise now. Maudgalyayana's son, for a son or daughter of good family who abides correctly in the Bodhisattva Vehicle, one should learn in this way: Whatever beings experience happiness in the past, all of those are the virtuous dharmas that arise now, which are truly increased. Whatever beings will experience happiness in the future, all of those are the virtuous aspects that arise now, which are truly increased. Whatever beings experience happiness in the present, all of those are the cause of the virtuous dharmas that arise now, and they also experience happiness in the present. Therefore, the cause of suffering that arises now is like this: it is the cause of what arises now. Therefore, one should examine which dharma is made the cause. Improper attention to the unwholesome side is called the cause of examination. Proper attention to the wholesome side is called the cause of action, and those are the causes of samsara and nirvana. Therefore, the Bodhisattva should avert the cause of samsara and truly increase the cause of nirvana. Maudgalyayana's son, I have accumulated various roots of virtue for the sake of knowing the path that goes everywhere. Maudgalyayana's son, in the immeasurable past aeons, far beyond that, there was a magician named 'Making Various Crafts' who was very skilled in the art of illusion. He showed various kinds of illusions in front of a large crowd of people. Sometimes it was the form of an elephant, sometimes it was the form of a horse, sometimes it was the form of a bull king, sometimes it was the form of people, and no one knew what it was. Maudgalyayana's son, what do you think? At that time, do you think that the magician was someone else? Do not look at it that way, because at that time, I was the magician. At that time, I also showed various illusions to sentient beings, and now I also show them to sentient beings.

It shows that all phenomena are like illusions. Just as a magician shows various kinds of illusions, so too, complete knowledge, which is the complete knowledge that understands the path of all beings. With the mind of complete knowledge, one also purifies the path of nirvana. Maudgalyāyana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva should study complete knowledge. Maudgalyāyana's son, in order to know the path of all going, in order to know the arising of all things, I have manifestly accumulated immeasurable roots of virtue. Maudgalyāyana's son, in the past, immeasurable eons ago, on the far shore of the far shore, there was a son of a chief named Candana, who had done extraordinary deeds for the Buddhas of the past, possessed immeasurable faith, and had immeasurable joy in the Tathāgata. As for the sake of the Buddha's wisdom, he saw that the path of all going was of the nature of cessation. And he thought to himself: By noble wisdom, one cannot manifestly awaken to complete enlightenment, nor should one abide in other wisdoms. Why is that? Because it is grasping at things themselves. For example, grasping at the path or grasping at nirvana. Not grasping at anything at all, one can manifestly awaken to complete enlightenment. Therefore, one should be without attachment to knowing the path of all going. For example, relying on a raft, one should abandon the raft after reaching the other shore. Likewise, having attained perfect enlightenment, one should abandon knowing the path of all going. Just as one sees all phenomena as being without inherent existence in a non-grasping manner, so too, in a non-attached manner, one should abandon knowing the path of all going. In that way, the dharmas will be completely seen as being like a raft. Maudgalyāyana's son, what do you think? At that time, at that moment, do you think that the one who became the son of the chief, Candana, was someone else? You should not look at it that way, for at that time, at that moment, I was the son of the chief, Candana. Maudgalyāyana's son, therefore, a Bodhisattva should be without attachment to all things. Maudgalyāyana's son, I, in the path of all going
