When there is no being and no self, this darkness and ignorance will be destroyed. For example, when light appears, darkness disappears. Similarly, if there is a definite understanding of emptiness, one will not be afraid of the assembly of darkness. Therefore, the Bhagavan will become fully aware and will open the door to the ten powers of the Tathagata. Like this, knowing the place, knowing the arising of the place, knowing the cessation of the place, knowing the path that leads to the cessation of the place, connect it like this, until the all-knowing one knows the path that leads to cessation. Maudgalyayana's son, therefore, a son or daughter of good family who wishes to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and abides correctly in the Bodhisattva Vehicle, should understand the three assemblies of darkness and ignorance, and should separately examine the three doors of liberation, and should make aspirations to the ten powers. Generate compassion for sentient beings obscured by the aggregates and the assembly of darkness, and practice yoga in order to correctly indicate the assembly of darkness of sentient beings. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, beyond countless immeasurable eons, there was a sage with great miraculous powers and great splendor, possessing five supernormal knowledges, named Golden Holder. He obtained the knowledge of knowing former lives. He remained in meditative equipoise in a certain state of samadhi, and by obtaining that samadhi, he remembered the essence of his former self. In the past, I was a universal monarch possessing the seven precious things, named Great Light. I heard from that sage who possessed five supernormal knowledges and powerful splendor that whoever kills takes the path of the lower realms; whoever abandons killing takes the path of higher realms; whoever takes the path of the exhaustion of afflictions takes the path of the all-knowing one. Having heard this, I thought, by obtaining what knowledge can one fully understand the destinations of all sentient beings, like this, knowing the path to all destinations, knowing like this, can one obtain that knowledge?

Good. That is excellent, I think. He thought thus: By what cause can the path that leads to all become the path of wisdom? He thoroughly understood thus: The cause for accomplishing the path that leads to all is the manifestation of karma. What is the cause of the manifestation of karma? He thought thus: The three afflictions, desire, hatred, and ignorance, are the cause of the manifestation of karma. He thought thus: What is the cause of desire, hatred, and ignorance? He thought thus: Inappropriate attention is the cause of karma and afflictions. Entering inappropriately, afflictions will arise, and afflictions will cause the manifestation of karma of body, speech, and mind. Inappropriate attention universally arises, causing the six sense faculties to manifest and be accomplished. Abiding in that, afflictions are again accomplished. Again, karma arises from afflictions, and that karma again causes the six sense faculties of maturation to be accomplished. Thus, this great mass of suffering at the beginning is utterly unknowable. Where beings are utterly ruined, if one does not thoroughly understand as it is, then by what knowledge can one obtain that which does not become suffering? It is said: That which does not become affliction is appropriate discrimination; if there are no afflictions, there is no manifestation of karma; if there is no manifestation of karma, there is no accomplishment of the six sense faculties; if nothing is manifested and accomplished, then that is nirvana. Inappropriate attention is samsara, and appropriate attention is nirvana. Inappropriate attention is entering, and appropriate attention is returning. Inappropriate attention is wandering in the wheel of samsara, and appropriate attention is turning the wheel of Dharma. Inappropriate attention is bondage, and appropriate attention is liberation. Whoever knows this way is liberated from the path of samsara and obtains the path of nirvana, and his suffering ceases. For example, he obtained the knowledge of the six sense faculties, the maturation of all karma, and then entered that assembly of beings. He, through that root of virtue, thoroughly understood the reason of all dharmas, and at first did all things that arise.
