What is karma? It is to individually discern intense desire, intense hatred, and intense delusion, and to engage in experiencing the taste of karma. Having properly taken up the paths of the ten virtuous actions, to subdue poverty and properly discern, to be held by the wise, to endure suffering, to endure discomfort, to properly take up the side of virtue, to properly take up the noble Dharma. This karma of properly taking up is suffering when it arises in the present, but its ripening in the future is happiness. What is the karma of properly taking up, which is also happiness when it arises in the present, and its ripening in the future is also happiness? It is to properly discern with small desire, small hatred, small delusion, and clear wisdom. Having properly taken up the paths of the ten virtuous actions, even with abundant resources, to subdue power and arrogance, and to abide on the basis of the side of virtue. At that time, one is also happy in oneself, experiencing the happiness of resources, and is praised by the wise. In the future, one will become desirable, pleasing, and agreeable. This karma of properly taking up is happiness in this life, and its ripening in the future is also happiness. Among them, knowing, seeing, clarifying, realizing, truly understanding, and being wise, this is called knowing how to properly take up. The Tathagata knows it as it is. If someone asks the Tathagata about knowing how to properly take up, from answering for a kalpa to answering for countless kalpas, his eloquence will not be exhausted. Similarly, by practicing, he will enjoy the sandalwood halls and mansions. Householder, how does the Tathagata truly know the arising of the knowledge of properly taking up the Dharma? Householder, the Tathagata truly knows what causes and conditions lead to the arising of the knowledge of properly taking up, and what causes and conditions lead to the true accomplishment. If one contemplates impermanence

From that place of dwelling. If, for the opponent, there is dwelling in following observation, the Thus-Gone One knows those as they truly are. If the Thus-Gone One is asked about truly knowing, grasping, and knowing the arising, from kalpas he answers, up to kalpas that are inexpressible and again inexpressible, his eloquence will not be exhausted. He will enjoy this space between the sandalwood courtyard and the pavilion. Householder, how does the Thus-Gone One truly know, grasp, know, and know the cessation as it truly is? Householder, the Thus-Gone One knows this in this way: He benefits immeasurable beings, averts what is not beneficial, makes light, dispels darkness, and completely liberates immeasurable beings from suffering, placing them in happiness. This is truly knowing, grasping, and knowing the cessation. That is also the nature of the unborn from the very beginning. Householder, in this way, the Thus-Gone One truly knows, grasps, and knows the cessation. If the Thus-Gone One is asked about truly knowing, grasping, and knowing the cessation, from kalpas he answers, up to kalpas that are inexpressible, and up to kalpas that are inexpressible and again inexpressible, he answers. He will enjoy this space between the sandalwood courtyard and the pavilion. Householder, how does the Thus-Gone One truly know the path that leads to the cessation of grasping and knowing as it truly is? Householder, with what knowledge does the Thus-Gone One fully know, comprehend, and realize the cessation of grasping and knowing? The Thus-Gone One truly knows that cessation as it truly is. If one dwells in following observation without tasting flavors, or if one dwells in following observation of faults, or if one dwells in following observation of definite departure, the Thus-Gone One truly knows those.
