Having spoken thus, the sinful one said to the son of the gods, 'These twenty sons of the gods are the most excellent works of the demons of the Bodhisattvas.' What are the twenty? They are: To attend to, rely on, and venerate those who wish to practice yoga, attain liberation, and fear samsara, is the work of demons. To separately contemplate emptiness, yet abandon sentient beings, is also the work of demons. To separately contemplate the unconditioned, yet be completely weary of the roots of virtue of the conditioned, is also the work of demons. To generate meditative absorption, yet seek to turn away from meditative absorption, is also the work of demons. To teach the Dharma, yet not generate great compassion for those who listen to the Dharma, is also the work of demons. To seek those who possess qualities and places of giving, yet be angry with those who are immoral, is also the work of demons. To teach the words of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, yet conceal the words of the Great Vehicle, is also the work of demons. To conceal profound words, yet teach various kinds of talk, is also the work of demons. Although knowing the path of the Bodhisattva, yet not fully seeking the path of the perfections, is also the work of demons. To praise diligence, yet not manifestly encourage sentient beings who are not diligent, is also the work of demons. Even accumulating roots of virtue, yet not manifesting the mind of enlightenment, is also the work of demons. Even abiding in the yoga of higher vision, yet not allowing sentient beings to correctly grasp higher vision, is also the work of demons. Seeking to completely exhaust all afflictions, yet longing for the afflictions of the continuum of samsara, is also the work of demons. To discriminate with wisdom, yet not hold to the focus on great compassion, is also the work of demons. All virtuous conduct that is not endowed with skillful means is also the work of demons. Not seeking the treasury of the Bodhisattvas, yet holding to the secret mantras of worldly boasting, is also the work of demons. Although having much learning, yet fearing that others will know, the teacher conceals the example of the Dharma, is also the work of demons. Giving advice for worldly purposes, yet not seeking much learning, is also the work of demons. To the Bodhisattva Dharma speaker who has rightly entered the Great Vehicle,

Do not rely on those who are equal to oneself, do not approach, do not venerate. To rejoice in unequal faculties when one has truly entered the vehicle of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is also the work of Mara. When the enjoyment, wealth, jewels, and power of Indra, Brahma, the guardians of the world, the king, the lord of Brahma, or the householder become great, do not rely on, do not approach, do not venerate those who possess the greatness of the Dharma. These are the twenty complete works of Mara for the sons of the gods, the Bodhisattvas. Then, the Bhagavan said to the evil Mara: Evil one, you have well explained these works of Mara for the Bodhisattvas, well done! well done! Any Bodhisattvas who hear these works of Mara, and having heard them, completely abandon them, will obtain twenty dharmas that bring about the complete maturation of Bodhi. What are the twenty? They are: great love, great compassion, not being weary of samsara, being completely seized by virtuous friends, pleasing the Buddhas who appear, listening to the perfections, having equal faculties with the retinue of Bodhisattvas, obtaining dharanis, possessing excellent eloquence, attaining supernormal knowledge, hearing dharmas that have not been heard, the mind of Bodhi manifesting in life after life, constantly and uninterruptedly obtaining renunciation, possessing leisure and endowments, practicing the dharmas as they have been heard, gathering and embracing beings with knowledge of skillful means and wisdom, upholding the sacred Dharma, being without deceit and hypocrisy, completely giving away all cherished things, and having no anger towards all beings. These are the twenty dharmas that will be obtained that bring about the complete maturation of Bodhi. Then, the son of the gods, Good Discipline, said to the evil Mara: Evil one, the Bhagavan has given you "well done," evil one, you have obtained a good gain. Mara said: Son of the gods, what good gain have I obtained here? What is the reason for that?
