Should be sought from... The son of the gods said: Manjushri, why do you show yourself to be so ignorant here? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, no one can fully know or fully understand the wisdom of the Buddha. Why is that? Son of the gods, the wisdom of the Buddha is without attachment, without discrimination, unspeakable, incomparable, without combination, without words, and separate from mind, intellect, and consciousness. Therefore, no one can fully know or fully understand it. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, if the wisdom of the Buddha is not something to be fully known, then how can these Shravakas fully know it? And how can Bodhisattvas abide in the state of non-retrogression? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, whatever is the wisdom of letters, this teaching is the expedient of the Tathagatas, but that wisdom itself is without letters. Son of the gods, just as fire does not arise from rubbing, but fire arises from rubbing wood, so too, son of the gods, if the Tathagata were to fully reveal the vast and correct wisdom of the Buddha from the very beginning, then no sentient being would fully know the wisdom of the Tathagata. Therefore, the Tathagata teaches that wisdom with the simile of rubbing wood, but that wisdom itself is without letters. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, what is the simile of rubbing wood? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, whatever simile there may be of discipline and rituals, or similes corresponding to the Paramitas, and similes of entering the Dharma of the path to Bodhi, this is called the simile of rubbing wood. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, what is not the simile of rubbing wood? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, whatever simile does not speak of birth, destruction, and abiding, does not speak of leading out and eliminating, does not speak of fully proclaiming all afflictions, does not speak of the benefits of purification, does not speak of causing aversion to Samsara, does not speak of causing joy in Nirvana, and does not speak of the purpose of fully understanding and abandoning

It is not for the sake of meditation, not for the sake of direct perception, not for the sake of obtaining any speech, not for the sake of realization, this is the essential speech of the sons of gods. The son of gods said: Manjushri, when such words are spoken, it is wonderful that this evil demon does not come here because of not striving with the eyes. Having spoken those words, not long after, in that instant, the evil demon appeared in the sky above, stirring up great clouds, and uttered a great roar. It frightened all the assembled retinue, and they wondered whose voice this roar was. Then, the Blessed One spoke to Manjushri, who had become a youth: Manjushri, have you seen the transformation of the evil demon? Manjushri replied: Blessed One, I have seen it. Sugata, I have seen it. Then, at that time, Manjushri, who had become a youth, bound the evil demon with a firm bond. Thinking such thoughts, he fell to the ground, thinking, "I am bound by a firm bond." He uttered the sound, "I am bound by a firm bond." Manjushri said: Evil one, there is another bond that is firmer than this bond. It always binds you, but you do not understand it. What is it? It is the bond of pride, thinking 'I am,' and the bond of perversion, and the bond of craving and views. Evil one, this is another firm bond that is firmer than this bond. It always binds you, but you do not understand it. The demon said: Manjushri, release me, and I will go to my abode. I will no longer do the work of a demon. Manjushri said: Evil one, if you must do the work of a Buddha, why should you be released? The demon said: Manjushri, I have entered in order to obstruct the teachings of the Buddha. How can I do the work of a Buddha? Manjushri said: Evil one, placing the work of a Buddha in the realm of a demon is the emanation of the knowledge of skillful means and wisdom by the Bodhisattvas. It is not wonderful that a Buddha does the work of a Buddha.

Therefore, how can a demon perform the deeds of a Buddha? This is an extremely rare event. At that time, the transformed Manjushri Kumara blessed that sinful being who possessed the form of a Buddha, causing him to sit upon the lion throne of the Buddha and to possess the fearlessness of the Buddha with such a blessing. Thereafter, the sinful demon said, "Venerable ones, whatever you desire, ask me, and I will answer your questions with prophecies, satisfying your minds." Then, the Venerable Mahakashyapa said to the sinful demon, "Sinner, what are the bonds of a Bhikshu Yogachara?" The demon replied, "Venerable Mahakashyapa, experiencing the taste of meditation is the bond of a Bhikshu Yogachara. Attachment to quiescence, entering into the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, perceiving emptiness as essence, perceiving the abandonment of views, perceiving the signless as essence, abandoning all signs, perceiving the wishless as essence, abandoning all wishes, perceiving Nirvana as essence, abandoning Samsara, these are the bonds of a Bhikshu Yogachara, Venerable Mahakashyapa. Why? Venerable Mahakashyapa, it is not that one should abandon views and meditate on emptiness, but the very nature of views is emptiness. It is not that one should abandon signs and meditate on the signless, but the very essence of signs is the signless. It is not that one should abandon wishes and meditate on the wishless, but the very essence of wishes is the wishless. It is not that one should abandon Samsara and meditate on Nirvana, but the very object of Samsara is Nirvana. Venerable Mahakashyapa, what is called Nirvana is not engaging in all perceptions, pride, and fixations on signs. Nirvana is not from birth, destruction, and exhaustion, but the very nature of unborn is Nirvana. When this teaching was expounded, five hundred Bhikshus, before receiving full ordination,
