If beings were not afflicted by afflictions, then the Buddha would not act either. Son of the gods, for example: For example, if beings were not sick, doctors would not act either. Similarly, son of the gods, if beings were not afflicted by afflictions, the Buddha would not act either. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, what arises that the Buddha appears? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, when birth, old age, sickness, and death arise, the Buddha appears. Why is that? Because the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, appear in order to abandon those dharmas. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, what dharma did the Tathagata generate after attaining enlightenment? What dharma did he prevent? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, the Tathagata did not generate any dharma after attaining enlightenment, nor did he prevent any. Why is that? Son of the gods, all dharmas are not born, nor do they cease. Son of the gods, the appearance of the Buddha, the appearance of the Buddha, this is just a conventional term for the nature of being unborn by nature. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, how is a Bodhisattva's intention perfect? Manjushri said: One who does not engage in any dharma with the view of an object. The son of the gods said: How is the superior intention perfect? Manjushri said: One who has no attachment to internal and external dharmas. The son of the gods said: How is a Bodhisattva's giving perfect? Manjushri said: One who abandons all afflictions and does not abandon all beings. The son of the gods said: How is a Bodhisattva's discipline perfect? Manjushri said: One who practices as the teacher has taught and establishes all beings in discipline, and does not abandon the mind of enlightenment with a superior intention. The son of the gods said: How is a Bodhisattva's patience perfect? Manjushri said: One who knows that all dharmas are of the nature of extreme cessation and, in order to abandon the harmful mind, anger, and contempt of all beings, practices the all-knowing

Also not abandoning. The son of the gods said: How is a Bodhisattva's diligence perfect? Manjushri said: When a Bodhisattva initiates diligence for the sake of any Dharma, that Dharma is like this: the Unsurpassed Perfectly Complete Enlightenment. He does not see that very thing as extremely real, and for the sake of abandoning the laziness of all sentient beings, he also does not abandon cherishing diligence. The son of the gods said: How is a Bodhisattva's Samadhi perfect? Manjushri said: When he knows that all Dharmas are naturally in a state of equanimity, and also practices Samadhi in order to subdue the afflictions of all sentient beings. The son of the gods said: How is a Bodhisattva's wisdom perfect? Manjushri said: When he attains the absence of cause, is separated from all elaborations, and for the sake of abandoning the views of all sentient beings, he discerns with wisdom. In that way, a Bodhisattva's wisdom is perfect. The son of the gods said: How does a Bodhisattva abide in loving-kindness? Manjushri said: When he sees that all Dharmas are naturally completely liberated from suffering. The son of the gods said: How does a Bodhisattva abide in compassion? Manjushri said: When he knows that all Dharmas have no karmic ripening. The son of the gods said: How does a Bodhisattva abide in joy? Manjushri said: When he neither generates joy nor is without joy towards all Dharmas. The son of the gods said: How does a Bodhisattva abide in equanimity? Manjushri said: When he becomes separated from duality towards all Dharmas. The son of the gods said: How is a Bodhisattva called a true Bodhisattva? Manjushri said: When he knows that all Dharmas are like illusions, without arising. The son of the gods said: How is a Bodhisattva a great hero? Manjushri said: When a Bodhisattva sees that all Dharmas are without self. The son of the gods said: How is a Bodhisattva the best of sentient beings? Manjushri said: When all Dharmas

It is when one knows that all places are without grasping and without foundation. The son of the gods asked: How does a Bodhisattva don great armor? Manjushri replied: When a Bodhisattva hears that all dharmas are equal to the sky, is not alarmed, not afraid, does not become fearful, and does not abandon the great armor. The son of the gods asked: How is a Bodhisattva subdued? Manjushri replied: When with great compassion, all sentient beings are long cherished, and one is not approached by the latent tendencies of craving. The son of the gods asked: How is it pleasant to associate with a Bodhisattva? Manjushri replied: When one does not fixate on self and other, and does not harm others with body, speech, and mind. The son of the gods asked: How is a Bodhisattva obedient? Manjushri replied: When one practices the dharmas as heard, and acts according to the words spoken. The son of the gods asked: How does a Bodhisattva harmoniously gather? Manjushri replied: When, for the sake of being in harmony with one's own mind, one does not deviate from the instructions of all sentient beings, and abides in harmony with all sentient beings. The son of the gods asked: How is a Bodhisattva endowed with shame and fully accomplished with modesty? Manjushri replied: When, for the sake of fully ripening all sentient beings, one is also nearly pacified internally and also moves externally. The son of the gods asked: How does a Bodhisattva have faith? Manjushri replied: When one also engages in all attachments, but also has no attachment to all attachments. The son of the gods asked: How does a Bodhisattva rely on friendship? Manjushri replied: When one does not cut off the lineage of the Buddhas. The son of the gods asked: How does a Bodhisattva repay kindness? Manjushri replied: When one does not waste the roots of virtue that have been done. The son of the gods asked: How does a Bodhisattva know kindness? Manjushri replied: When one does not desire another vehicle. The son of the gods asked: How does a Bodhisattva have few desires? Manjushri replied: When one's own afflictions also
