The Blessed One went somewhere. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, said to that child: Child, offer these flowers to the Thus-Gone One. Saying this, he gave him many Mandarava flowers. Then, that child offered those flowers to the Blessed One. After offering them, he bowed to the feet of the Blessed One with his head, circumambulated three times, and sat down in front of the Blessed One, saying this to the Blessed One: I take refuge in the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks. May this root of my virtue also be completely dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Blessed One, I brought a beautiful woman of the country, favored by the king, named Golden Peak Splendor, to the garden for joyful play. Blessed One, she became pale and her body weakened, and even all her relatives abandoned her, and I also felt great fear. Blessed One, will I not be killed by the king because of this? The Blessed One replied: Child, do not be afraid. Those who have gone for refuge to the Buddha will no longer have fear. I will entertain you with fearlessness, do not generate fear. Child, even so, completely abandon the source from which fear and dread arise. The child asked: Blessed One, what is the source of fear and dread? The Blessed One replied: Child, desire, hatred, and ignorance are the source of fear and dread. The pride of thinking 'I am' is the source. The arising of views is the source. Excessive attachment due to craving is the source. Grasping at 'I' and 'mine' is the source. Excessive attachment to things is the source. Complete clinging and contention are the source. The bond of the view of the perishable aggregate is the source. Perceiving impermanence as permanence is the source. Perceiving suffering as happiness is the source. Perceiving impurity as purity is the source. Perceiving selflessness as self is the source. The perception of completely clinging to the aggregates is the source. Not discriminating the elements separately is the source. The sources

Not knowing is the basis. Not regarding the body as a fault is the basis. Manifestly rejoicing in life is the basis. Boy, since fear and dread arise from those bases, they should be abandoned. Boy, have you seen that girl's body completely destroyed? He replied: Blessed One, I have seen it. The Blessed One said: Boy, all compounded things are thus impermanent, suffering, selfless, of a changing nature, unstable, not real, deceiving children, arising from perversion, without wavering, completely fabricated. Appearing from nothingness, like an illusion. The taste experienced is small, like a dream. Appearing as confusion, like a mirage. Not born from the beginning, like an optical illusion. The ripening of karma is not wasted, in this way like an image. In a way that does not move, like a moon in water. Because sound is understood as sound from no sound, therefore like an echo in a valley. Because it is the door of no manifest fabrication, therefore like the form of a shadow. By nature it is false, therefore like a void of cessation. Unseizable. Like the wind. False. Without foundation. Accumulating. Without decreasing. Without completion. Boy, thus all phenomena are without ownership, therefore you should not be manifestly attached to it. Boy, what do you think? How do you see those thoughts and discriminations of yours that are in accordance with desire? The boy replied: Blessed One, the desire of individual ordinary people arises from completely discriminating color and beautiful form. If it were not for the Dharma and Discipline of the Noble Ones, it would not arise through discriminating impurity and so forth. Blessed One, if one does not discriminate in this way, the arising of desire will not universally arise. The Blessed One said: Boy, well done, well done! Just like that, not discriminating and not discriminating is the nature of desire. Boy, you should strive to properly attend to the Dharma, not attending to it as self, not attending to it as other, and not superimposing other views. The boy replied: Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva properly attend to the Dharma?
