Ugly in shape and ugly in appearance. Even after seeing those with terrifying shapes, those endowed with merit, fame, and splendor, their minds are unshaken like Mount Meru. Like an illusion, like a dream, and like a cloud, they realize all phenomena. Thus, by realizing the nature of the Dharma, they abide in meditation and abide in the Dharma. Whoever clings to the thought of "I" and "mine," and has true attachment to things and the body, the unwise abide in clinging, and seeing this, they become frightened, and I am also extremely intoxicated. The sons of the Shakya realize that all phenomena arise from conditions, and realize that they are of the nature of non-things. Completely endowed with a mind like the sky, even seeing armies and deceit, they are not intoxicated. Monks, thus, from among those sons of the sinful Mara, those sons of Mara, such as the leader, who have extreme faith in the Bodhisattva, are seated on the right side of Mara. Those who take the side of Mara are seated on the left side of the sinful Mara. Then, the sinful Mara said to his children: "Children, with what kind of army shall we subdue the Bodhisattva?" Then, from the right side, the son of Mara named Leader spoke to his father in verse: "Wanting to awaken the sleeping Dragon King, wanting to awaken the sleeping Elephant King, wanting to awaken the sleeping Deer King, that is wanting to awaken the King of Men who abides in goodness." From the left side, the son of Mara named Evil Wisdom said this: "With just a glance, the heart will completely shatter, and the great trees in the world that possess essence will shatter. If my gaze strikes, beings will be like touching a corpse, where is the power to survive?" From the right side, named Sweet Sound, said: "If just a glance shatters trees, what effort do I need to make for people, what is the use of saying there is essence? If just a glance could destroy Mount Meru, you would not be able to open your eyes in front of him. Furthermore, someone who wants to cross the ocean with two hands, and is able to drain and drink the water there, like that, to look at him purely and clearly is even more painful."
