Like a deer in a dried-up riverbed. When one has wealth, grain, precious jewels, great power, Clinging and desiring them is the behavior of a child. When wealth declines and suffering arises, One completely abandons them, like a person leaving an empty pasture. Just as flowers, trees, and fruit-laden trees, So too, a generous person is pleasing to others. When wealth declines, threatened by old age and abandoned, At that time, one is not pleasing, like a vulture. When one has possessions and excellent form, like a lord, Meeting them is delightful, and the senses are pleased. When pleasure is threatened by suffering and wealth is exhausted, At that time, one is not desired, like the Lord of Death. When one is aged by old age and youth has passed, It is like a tree struck by lightning. When one is bent over by old age, it is like a dilapidated house filled with fear. Quickly speak of the suffering that arises from old age. The assemblies of women and men are withered by old age, Like vines covering a dense forest of sala trees. Old age steals away diligence, skill, and strength, Like a person sinking into the mud. Old age makes a beautiful form ugly, Old age steals away splendor, power, and strength. Old age steals away happiness and brings contempt, Old age brings death, and old age steals away radiance. With hundreds of diseases and dense illnesses, suffering, Tormenting beings like a person hunting deer. Look at beings destroyed by old age and sickness, Quickly speak of the origin of suffering. For example, in late winter, there is great wind and snow, Grass and trees wither, and the radiance of forest medicines is stolen. Likewise, this disease steals away the radiance of beings, And diminishes the senses, form, and strength. Wealth, grain, and great riches are ultimately exhausted, Disease constantly despises beings. It causes harm and hates suffering, It completely torments, like the sun from the sky. Death, transmigration, and the time of death and transmigration, Those who are cherished and loved are always separated. They do not return and will not be met again, Like the fruit of a tree, similar to the ornaments of nagas. It makes those who are peaceful and powerful powerless, Death steals away life like a flood carrying away a tree. A person goes alone, without a companion or friend, Even with offspring, one has no power. Death seizes hundreds of thousands of living beings, Like a crocodile in the ocean for the assemblies of beings. For nagas, it is like a garuda, an elephant, or a lion.

The assembly of grass and tree beings is like fire, From such hundreds of faults as these, You made a prayer to liberate beings, Remember the practice of your past prayer. The time for your manifestation has arrived, When the assembly of women are very happy, And with the sound of cymbals awaken the Great Hero, Then, through the power of the Sugatas, Various verses arise from the sound of the cymbals. All conditioned things quickly perish, Like a flash of lightning in the sky that does not last long. Let this time of yours be near to abiding, The time for the manifestation of good conduct has arrived. Conditioned things are impermanent and not stable, Like an unbaked clay pot destined to break. The possessions of others are like an illusion, Like a city of mirages that does not last long. These conditioned things are of the nature of destruction, Like trying to stop the flow of summer water in vain. Like sand on the bank of a river, Dependent on conditions, their nature is weak. Conditioned things are like the light of a butter lamp, Quick to arise and of the nature of ceasing. Like the wind, they do not last long, Like a bubble, they are weak and without essence. Conditioned things are unmoving and empty, If examined, they are like a clump of plantain trees. Like a magic trick, they confuse the mind, Like deceiving a child with empty hands. All conditioned and transformed things, Arise from causes and conditions, One is the cause, and one arises in dependence, Children do not understand this. For example, relying on munja grass and vines, With effort, they can be twisted into rope, And the water bucket, rope, and wheel, None of these alone can accomplish anything. Thus, all the limbs of existence are accomplished, By relying on others and the assembly of others, Each of them individually cannot accomplish anything, The beginning and end cannot be seen. If there is a seed, like the sprouting of a sprout, But the seed is not the sprout itself, It is not different from it, nor is it the same, Thus, it is the nature of neither permanence nor annihilation. Ignorance is the condition for formations, But these formations are not truly existent, Ignorance and these formations, Are empty in nature and without movement.
