Chapter Thirteen: The Chapter of Encouragement. Chapter Thirteen: The Chapter of Encouragement. The Mahayana Sutra called "The Holy Great Play." Volume Eight. Monks, when the Bodhisattva was dwelling among the retinue of consorts, those who were delighted to perform the work of offering to the Bodhisattva, such as gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, Indra, Brahma, and many world protectors, came forth, each uttering their own joyful sounds. Then, monks, at another time, the gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, Indra, Brahma, and many world protectors thought to themselves: If this noble being remains for too long among the retinue of consorts, then which beings will he ripen over a long period of time with the four objects of gathering—giving, pleasing speech, beneficial conduct, and accord with the meaning? And which beings, after he attains enlightenment, will understand the Dharma he teaches and become vessels of the Dharma? If those beings disappear, and then the Bodhisattva manifests, will it not be too late for him to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment? Then, with reverence and respect, they joined their palms and prostrated to the Bodhisattva, thinking: When will we be able to witness the manifestation of this supremely pure and excellent Bodhisattva? And after manifesting, sitting beneath that great king of trees, subduing the armies of Mara, and awakening to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, possessing the ten powers of the Tathagata, possessing the four fearlessnesses of the Tathagata, possessing the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, and turning the unsurpassed wheel of Dharma, which is repeated three times and revolves in twelve aspects, with the great play of a Buddha, so that the world, including gods, humans, and asuras, may be well pleased according to their desires.

Monks, the Bodhisattva, from countless kalpas of countless kalpas, for a long time, constantly and continuously, is independent of others in all worldly and transworldly dharmas, and is himself the teacher in all virtuous practices. For a long time, he has known the time, known the measure, known the appropriateness, and has not declined from supernormal knowledge, possessing the five supernormal knowledges, playing freely with the feet of miraculous power, being skilled in understanding the thoughts and faculties of sentient beings, knowing the time and the non-time, observing the time, and like the great ocean, not exceeding the appropriate time. He possesses the power of the wisdom of supernormal knowledge, therefore he knows that this is the time to be embraced, this is the time to be subdued, this is the time to be gathered, this is the time to be benefited, this is the time to be abandoned, this is the time to speak, this is the time not to speak, this is the time to leave home, this is the time to be ordained, this is the time to recite, this is the time to properly attend to, this is the time to be secluded, this is the time to enter the retinue of the royal family, and so on, this is the time to enter the retinue between Brahmins and householders, this is the time to enter the retinue of gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, Indra, Brahma, world protectors, monks, nuns, upasakas, and upasikas, this is the time to teach the Dharma, this is the time to truly abide within, all these he knows himself.
