That meditation which is for the sake of the cause of ripening benefits for others, for the sake of obtaining the fruit of aspirations, and for the sake of realizing things as they truly are, that is the perfection of meditation with great joy. Listening to the Dharma in order to comprehend all the conduct of the Tathagatas is the perfection of wisdom with great joy. These are the six perfections of great joy. What are the six perfections without great joy? To give completely without attachment to wealth, food, clothing, and so on, and without expecting anything in return, that is the perfection of giving without great joy. The discipline of dwelling in a house with renunciation, that is the perfection of discipline without great joy. To endure regret, that is the perfection of patience without great joy. To strive to abandon suffering, that is the perfection of diligence without great joy. The meditation that has the characteristic of experiencing suffering in various ways, the true arising of suffering, and attachment to it, and being equal to anger, that is the perfection of meditation without great joy. The wisdom that a Bodhisattva has, without great joy in the three realms, that is the perfection of wisdom without great joy. These are the six perfections without great joy. What are the six perfections of upholding what is heard? Giving the Dharma to beings, and teaching, reciting, and upholding it, that is the perfection of giving of upholding what is heard. To cause the body, speech, and mind to act correctly according to the seven verses of the root of virtue, that is the perfection of discipline of upholding what is heard. To endure suffering for the sake of just one well-spoken word, that is the perfection of patience of upholding what is heard. Bodhisattva Brahmin.
