That is to regard the part of consciousness as greater. The part of the body cannot do it. Consciousness is feeling, consciousness is thinking, therefore it is called consciousness. Great sage, you should understand consciousness in that way. Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses: All enemies should be guarded very carefully, which is done by afflictions and so on. Knowing and not knowing, the knower, possessing wisdom and delusion. Seeing and pride, ignorance and consciousness, all have them. Without consciousness, nothing will happen. Without consciousness, they will not gather. Once they become one, they will gather. Not one, like wheels and vehicles. People gather together, not self, other, or both. Not one, not the other, like two oxen. A vehicle has two yokes, has two wheels, is bound by ropes, and is known as a vehicle. Likewise, the vehicle of the body also arises from the combination of elements. From this, the senses are possessed, and it is shown by consciousness. Joints and connections, and thus veins and earth-water, hair, bones, teeth, and head, membranes, skin colored, intestines, lungs, kidneys, heart, diaphragm, and fat, etc., all gathered together, the body can exist. Among them, the elements are the great body, because all things arise from the mind, therefore it is called consciousness. That is the driver. Great sage, moreover, consciousness is subtle, formless, invisible, and unmanifest. It is not the source of color, shape, and form. After abandoning the coarse senses, there is no other way to view consciousness. The heartbeat of a person, where fear comes from, what is discrimination and analysis, all of that is the part of consciousness, not the part of the body. Then, the great sage Wide Wisdom said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how should the previous nature of beings be observed?

Please observe. How beings approach hell, how they approach pretas, and how they approach the birthplaces of animals, please observe their nature. How they approach the gods, how they approach humans, please observe what are the roots of virtue and what are the roots of non-virtue. By what roots of virtue will they be born as gods and humans? By what roots of non-virtue will they be born as sentient beings in hells, animals, and pretas? Please, Bhagavan, prophesy this. The Bhagavan spoke, "Great sage, listen to the nature of beings, the roots of virtue, and death and rebirth that you ask about. Furthermore, this realm of omniscience is not the realm of the five kinds of direct perception. This is not the realm of the gods and Brahmas, etc., up to Akanistha. This is not even the realm of the Hearers, so how could it be the realm of other sentient beings? Great sage, this is the realm of consciousness of those who have abandoned the three stains, obtained the first Dharma-nature, and constantly enter my teachings. This is not the realm of all gods and sages." After he spoke thus, the great sage Gyaspa requested the Bhagavan, saying, "Bhagavan, I am now old and frail, and I cannot lift the stone used to throw at fruits. I cannot lift the stone burdened with great responsibility. I take refuge in the Bhagavan, the Dharma, and the noble Sangha that has abandoned all disputes. I, together with my future disciples and attendants, take refuge in the Three Jewels. Bhagavan, please explain where one goes after dying and transmigrating from the world of the gods." The Bhagavan spoke, "Great sage, therefore, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain what the nature and signs are of being born in the world of the gods. Great sage, if someone gives flowers, incense, and garlands, attends to them with reverence, meditates, does much good, and has faith, then at the time of death, they will be born among the garland-bearing gods. Great sage, at the time of death, their body emits an extremely

It appears like flowers imbued with the fragrance of incense. The great sage will die as a result of a great rain of flowers falling upon him. Various colors of flowers will be scattered upon his body. Those limbs that are dearest to him will also bear flowers and grieve. The color of his face will become oily. His eyes will neither be completely closed nor completely open. He will stretch out his limbs well and die. At the time of his death, these signs will appear. Such omens will also be seen: seeing a tiered house adorned with various flowers, decorated with different flowers, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of women, and then saying to his limbs, "In my dream, I saw a tiered house with various kinds of divine flowers, filled with flowers, scattered with divine flowers, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of women." I said this to those limbs, and they also know that he will be born among the Garland-Bearing Gods. When he dies and is born among the Garland-Bearing Gods, he will see his parents uniting and thus fully take birth. Those garland-bearers will also give each other the power of both, just like the people of Jambudvipa. Their consciousnesses will intermingle, and they will enter overwhelmed by joy alone, but they will not produce semen. Great sage, those gods are held in the womb by the goddesses for seven days. After seven days, they are born from the right side. Great sage, after he is born from the womb, a garland strung with various fragrant, extremely pleasing, and diverse divine flowers will appear from his chest. Great sage, the fragrance of that garland will be carried by the wind of faith, spreading in all directions for about one yojana. That garland has seven colors, namely white, red, yellow, blue, beryl, cyan, and a color more vibrant than a red lotus. Before he dies, he will wear those pleasing garlands of various kinds, and they will not decay. Therefore,
