The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Called "Asked by the Holy Sage Vrihaspati". The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Called "Asked by the Holy Sage Vrihaspati". The forty-ninth chapter of the hundred thousand chapters of the Holy Great Heap of Jewels Dharma, namely, the "Asked by the Holy Sage Vrihaspati". Volume One. In Indian language: Ārya-riṣi-vyāsa-paripṛcchā-nāma-mahāyāna-sūtra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Called "Asked by the Holy Sage Vrihaspati". I prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was on the bank of the Ganges River, where there was no place to wade, with cuckoos, parrots, bees, the king of geese, and many flocks of birds making sweet sounds, sheltered by the branches of trees such as banyan, nyagrodha, sandalwood, ashoka, and salaki, and where fragrant flowers were always scattered. There, all the great sangha of monks had done what had to be done, had accomplished what had to be accomplished, had exhausted defilements, had exhausted dust, did not turn away from the Dharma, and dwelt in meditation and recitation. Sitting on cushions and thrones, they adorned that place like the king of geese. Some dwelt in inner mindfulness, some dwelt under trees, and they all discussed the teachings of the Tathagata. Their demeanor was gentle and stable, their conduct was extremely peaceful, and they were completely free from attachment to desire, malice, sloth, sleep, and laziness. Then, the Blessed One spoke to the monks, saying: Monks, give alms! Do what you should do! Restrain yourselves with discipline, and let your minds dwell peacefully on the senses! Then, the Blessed One, together with a great many monks, such as the venerable Ananda, Maha-Kasyapa, Sariputra, Bakkula, Nanda, the venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya, and so on, all great hearers, spoke words that were very joyful and satisfying. At that time, the venerable Ananda saw a light appearing in the west like the orb of the sun.

He prayed. "Lord, what is that which is blazing in the western direction, like the rays of light entering?" After praying thus, the Lord said to the venerable Ananda: "Ananda, this is the son of Black Fragrance, the sage who possesses the five mundane superknowledges, the best of sages, called Sage Extensive Increase. The sage abides in fierce asceticism, exhausted by hundreds of thousands of diligent practices. About five hundred people without physical beauty follow him like shadows, including the sage White Non-Youth, as well as humans and gods, the son of Good Protector, the son of Deer Mother, the son of Sound Maker, as well as Peg Ear, the son of Fire, the son of All-Around Carver, and the one who delights in diligent practice, and so forth, surrounded and following behind. Then, in the meantime, Extensive Increase saw the Lord surrounded by the assembly of monks, with subdued senses, a calm mind, delighting in the solitude of meditation, dwelling in the midst of a dense forest of trees. Having seen this, Extensive Increase thought to himself: 'Alas, how wonderful! This Lord, who is known in the world as the one who speaks the unperverted omniscience, is indeed the place. How is it that this one, whose color is increasing, who possesses excellence, and whose wondrous form is vast and complete, will undoubtedly become a Tathagata? In this way, the Lord, possessing such a vast form, has abandoned the power of a wheel-turning monarch with six poisons, and has also abandoned six thousand women, including the jewel woman Earth-Born Mother, and has gone to dwell in the forest of asceticism. Alas, this is truly rare and wonderful in the world!' Thus he thought. Then, the son of the sage Fire Offering also saw the Lord from afar. Having seen him, he was satisfied, pleased, delighted, and greatly rejoiced. Having generated joy and contentment, he praised the Lord with these verses that resemble the manner: Dwelling in the midst of blue trees, Appearing yellow like refined gold, Since the form is exceedingly radiant, It is the joy of all beings.
