Thus he pleaded. This retinue is entirely ignorant. Since they reside here, I beseech the Blessed One to know that I am present here. The Blessed One declared: Great sage, all beings born in existence are certain and also know that thing. Then, the venerable Ananda pleaded to the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, who is this sage surrounded by a multitude of ascetics, clear and thorough, peaceful and wise, with intelligence and knowledge, fearless, and with a crown of matted locks? The Blessed One declared: Ananda, this is the great sage Expansive, who performs the Vedas, lives by the treatises of the powerful boy, and collects various letters. Then, all those Arhats, having seen Expansive, pleaded to the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, since this one has not been completely liberated from the suffering of samsara, what benefit does this one, who has attained afflictions through severe asceticism, gain? Those Arhats also thought thus: What speech will Expansive speak to the Blessed One? Will it be speech about selflessness, or speech about giving, morality, and abundance, or speech about what causes and conditions? Then, the great sage Expansive pleaded to the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, it is very difficult to find this assembly of great sages arising and present now. If, after requesting, the Blessed One would grant me an opportunity to declare a prophecy, Blessed One, I would like to ask the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha about some aspects. After pleading thus, the Blessed One declared to the great sage Expansive: Great sage, ask whatever you wish, and whatever you ask, I will prophesy it accordingly. Then, the great sage Expansive pleaded to the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, how should giving be done? What is the meaning of not giving? What is the meaning of what is called giving? How should one properly seek a patron? How does one become a giver? How is one a patron but not a giver?

How does a donor go to the end of giving? Is it dwelling in accumulation, or dwelling in stacking? How should one view it? How does a donor give without dwelling on receiving? How should one view the ripening of giving? How is it to make offerings to the stupa of the Bhagavan after his nirvana? How should one view the ripening of that merit? Bhagavan, after you have completely passed into nirvana, who will completely uphold it? Then, the Bhagavan said to the great ascetic, Expansive Intellect: "Great ascetic, this question you have asked about the initial generation of the mind is crude." Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra, with long eyebrows, wrinkles, and white hair, raised his eyebrows with his right hand, lifted his eyelids, and said: "Great ascetic, Expansive Intellect, although this person is famous in the world, he is like an ignorant child who does not know the logic of reasoning, yet he is an unsurpassed wise one. He has abandoned the words of cause and condition, and the words of selflessness, but has let go of the words of the cause of the heavenly realm. Why has he only asked about the words of giving?" Then, the venerable Ananda prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan and said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, I will explain to this great ascetic the fruit of giving, the teachings of giving." The Bhagavan said: "Ananda, what is asked by the Tathagata and spoken by the Shravakas is not the custom of the Tathagatas, it is not necessary. Ananda, do not say that, this is not the time." Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, I will answer whatever the great ascetic Expansive Intellect asks." The Bhagavan said: "Shariputra, do not say inappropriate things either. It is not appropriate to dispel the doubts of the Shravakas in my presence, because it will displease the minds of sentient beings. After their minds are displeased, they will say: 'Because Expansive Intellect asked, but he allowed the Shravakas to explain, then the Tathagata is certainly not omniscient.' Or they will think it is arrogance towards the Buddha."

They will say, "There is none, there is none," and sentient beings will go to hell. Then those monks, having developed joy towards the Blessed One, requested him thus: "Blessed One, please explain in order to dispel the great sage's extensive doubts." Then the Blessed One said to the great sage: "Great sage, listen to the ripening of generosity, the act of generosity, the act of generosity, the classification of generosity, what the meaning of generosity is, how to practice generosity if I fully enjoy generosity, and how the ripening of merit increases when giving to them. Because what is generosity, and what is the meaning of generosity, great sage, for this, the giver completely gives away the object of generosity, generates faith, and makes others do it, goes to another place, and makes others do it, even if that person also gives away wealth, then whose wealth is it, that is the benefactor. The one who gives by making others do it is the giver, not the benefactor. Whoever gives his own things himself is both the giver and the benefactor. Great sage, in thirty-two ways, generosity is seen as impure. What are the thirty-two ways? For example, great sage, for this, the giver views it perversely, has no faith, no joy, and is numerous, if he gives, then it is impure. Great sage, also, giving in order to repay a favor is impure. Therefore, because of inferiority and desire, giving to the fire of the mind in this way, or giving to the flame, or giving to the water, or giving to the king in order to fully understand oneself, then the giving is impure. Giving to robbers and others because of not being afraid, giving five uncommon things, then the giving is impure. Giving poison, giving weapons, killing sentient beings and giving meat,
