Entering into meditative absorption, possessing perfect wisdom, possessing perfect liberation, and possessing perfect vision of the wisdom of liberation, if one gives alms, it is a great almsgiving. To give fearlessness to crows, owls, deer, and others who have gone to the animal realm is a great almsgiving. To fulfill the wishes of those who need something or who do not have something is a great almsgiving. Great sage, thus, giving alms is pure and is a great almsgiving. If one desires this pure almsgiving, one should cultivate pure almsgiving in this way. If any sentient beings are encouraged by others to generate faith and joy, those who rejoice in this pure almsgiving will equally become accumulators of merit and benefactors. Thus, those who rejoice and those who encourage will all equally become accumulators of merit. Great sage, how will the ripening of merit be when the Buddha, the Bhagavan, passes into complete nirvana? How will the merit of giving be exhausted? Thus you have spoken. Great sage, therefore, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Great sage, if someone makes offerings to the Bhagavan after he has passed into complete nirvana, or to one who is now living, the ripening of that is the same, equal, and identical, so it is said. Why is that? The Tathagatas are distinguished by the Dharmakaya, not by the Rupakaya. If anyone makes offerings to me while I am living or after I have passed into complete nirvana, because the mind is the same, there is not the slightest difference in merit between the two. Great sage, for example, a Chakravartin king instructs his retinue, "From now on, none of my people shall kill, steal what is not given, engage in sexual misconduct, utter false words, slander, harsh words, or frivolous talk. They shall not generate thoughts of greed, malice, or wrong views," thus he instructs, and to the people...

Having heard the words of the royal messenger, if they follow the commands of the messenger, although it is not offering to the body of the king, the king will think, "They have done as I commanded," and will be pleased. Those who carefully observe the commands proclaimed by the king and protect all precepts such as not killing will fully obtain the opportunity to be born in the heavens due to the maturation of that action. Those who do not observe the commands proclaimed by the king and engage in unwholesome actions, because they do unwholesome deeds, will receive suffering from the king in this life. From the time they die from here, they will also fall into evil paths. Great sage, similarly, what will those who have not seen my physical body but do not keep the teachings receive? They will generate wrong views and fall into hell like Devadatta. Those who protect the teachings and make offerings after I have completely passed into nirvana, I consider them to be supreme. Great sage, now that I have reached the peak, surpassing all beings, and have attained the wisdom of omniscience, even if I proclaim names to uncertain beings, the teachings should be perfected. Great sage, whoever makes offerings after I have completely passed into nirvana, after my death, it is like making offerings to me alive. Great sage, whatever meritorious deeds those beings do are the causes of great merit that turn into enlightenment. Great sage, for example, if a fire is set in a dense reed bed by the water's edge, the flowing water of rain will extinguish it. Great sage, similarly, the benefactor will accumulate a great collection of the merit of giving. When the benefactor's faith in giving descends like rain on the benefactor's own continuum, the benefactor himself will turn into the continuum, and so on. However, the thing given will not remain in a pile, nor will it remain in a collection, nor will it remain in a place. In any case, the act of giving in this way follows the benefactor like a shadow.

it will also disappear. Therefore, although the giver sees the maturation of merit, the merit does not enter his heart. Great sage, for example, if grapes and sugar cane are not squeezed, the juice cannot be seen, but it can be seen after squeezing. The juice of grapes and sugar cane does not exist in a piled, gathered, or scattered way. The juice is also not contained in each grape and each piece of sugar cane. Great sage, similarly, if giving is separated from the giver's hand and heart, it will not exist, and giving will not bring about mature results, nor will it abandon the giver. Just as if grapes and sugar cane are discarded, the juice cannot appear, so without a giver, the maturation of giving will not occur, and the maturation of giving will not appear until the activities of life have ceased. Great sage, for example, the seed of a Nyagrodha tree will not appear as a tree until it has sprouted. Similarly, the increase of giving will bring about abundant fruits. Great sage, for example, some merchants take a small amount of goods to cities in other countries, and in special markets, they transform their goods into great wealth. His wealth changes from small to large, just as bees collect nectar, so the maturation of the giver will also become more abundant. For example, clouds can fully contain the water of future rainfall. Similarly, the giver can also promote mature results. Great sage, in this way, the giver promotes merit, practices giving, and enjoys its fruits. Therefore, the recipient can recognize giving. Great sage, the so-called merit is that which can perfect the next life, or protect by obtaining power and ability, therefore it is called merit. That which can generate body and enjoyment from one life to another is therefore called of the next life. Then, the great sage Extensive Wisdom said to the Blessed One:
