Giving punishment to those who do not have, and thinking, "These will become mine, will become my service and offerings," the giving of gathering for the sake of gathering and obtaining sentient beings, and the giving and giving for the sake of what is said, sound, and verses, and giving to musicians for the sake of dance, song, laughter, play, talk, and joy, then those gifts are impure. Giving to astrologers for the sake of divination, and giving the wealth of others to friends, and being happy and satisfied when wild animals and birds eat other people's grain piles or barley piles in their houses or fields, that is also an impure gift. Giving for the sake of showing off, and giving to doctors for fear of physical discomfort, and scolding beggars and making them angry before giving, that is also impure. If one doubts whether there is such a result after giving, that is also impure. If one is tormented by pain and regret after giving, that is also impure. If, after giving, one thinks, "Everything taken from me will be given back to me in the next life," if one generates such a thought, that is also impure. If one thinks, "May the result of this merit be enjoyed only by myself, and not become anything for any other sentient being," if one generates such a thought, that is also impure. If one gives because one is in the prime of youth, and later in old age, when afflicted by illness, at the time of death, when suffering from a blow, when appearing, and when turning into the sorrow of death, without joy and faith in the Buddha, but letting the limbs such as hands and feet do it, thereby giving to the recipients of giving, that is also impure. If one is in a foreign land, but thinks, "In such and such a place, I will become a famous benefactor," giving for the sake of fame, that is also impure. If one is reluctant to give good food, then worldly people do not like it.

If one gives alms out of fear of being blamed by the world, that almsgiving is also not completely pure. If, out of love for a woman, with the intention of taking her as a wife, one pleases those related to the woman's family, friends, and relatives with jewels, gold, silver, diamonds, beryl (Sanskrit: वैडूर्य, Roman transliteration: vaiḍūrya, literal meaning: beryl), silk, coral, dukula cloth, and so forth, that almsgiving is also not completely pure. If one thinks, "I have much wealth, but I have no son; I should give alms to someone who is worthy," that almsgiving is also not completely pure. If one gives alms with the thought that by giving in this life, one will gain benefits in the next world, that almsgiving is completely pure. If, out of desire for flowers, fruits, and miscellaneous things, one throws tattered and dirty clothes to the poor, miserly, and suffering, but gives alms to those who have obtained great wealth, that almsgiving is also not completely pure. Great sage, those thirty-two kinds of giving are also regarded as not completely pure. The giving of those great sages is like planting bad seeds in salty soil, which only produces sprouts. That giving does not ripen, but due to the defects of the soil and seeds, it does not turn into flowers and fruits. Great sage, it is like a person randomly selecting seeds and planting them in uncultivated land. If the seeds remain in the soil and sprout after rain, they will surely grow into sprouts, but they will not turn into flowers and fruits. Great sage, similarly, that classification of giving, because the mind and actions are all defiled by afflictions, will not ripen into abundant fruit. Then, the great sage Gyashen folded his palms and said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, the ripening that accords with the All-Knowing Wisdom, which you have taught, is for the benefit and happiness of beings! Blessed One, how is moral discipline corrupted and

If given to those with greed, then the fruition of generosity will not be satisfying. (The Blessed One taught:) Great ascetic, listen to how one enters into the fruition of generosity. Great ascetic, whatever little is given with faith, all of that is called generosity. Great ascetic, whoever, without considering the fear of the next world, without being urged, generates faith towards those who possess discipline or those with bad, broken discipline, opens their eyes, and gives with an equal mind of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, Great ascetic, that person is a benefactor. Great ascetic, furthermore, five kinds of generosity should be perfected. What are the five? Giving at the appropriate time to beggars, the sick, those who care for the sick, those who speak the Dharma, and those who go to other lands, these are the five. Furthermore, there are five: giving Dharma, giving material goods, giving lodging, giving lamps, and giving incense and garlands. Great ascetic, Gyaspa asked: Blessed One, what is completely pure generosity? The Blessed One taught: Whatever generosity is given with faith, focusing on all sentient beings with a mind of loving-kindness, with respect and humility, all of that is completely pure. Generosity dedicated to liberation is called completely pure. Furthermore, there are five ways of regarding generosity as supreme: What are the five? Giving to the Thus-Gone One is supreme. Giving to the Sangha is supreme. Giving to those who speak the Dharma is supreme. Giving to the sick is supreme. Giving to parents is supreme. Furthermore, if a king loses his throne and power, giving to him is great generosity. If a king is tormented, without protection, or sick, giving to him is great generosity. If a king is abandoned, and others are also in distress, on the verge of death, saving him from the brink of death is great generosity. If medicine is given to the sick, that is great generosity. If generosity is given at the appropriate time to the noble Sangha who are perfect in discipline, that will bring great fruit. Samadhi (meditative concentration).
