Also called "ground," therefore, these four grounds surpass the other grounds. They become the support for as many proximate afflictions as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, and they coexist with the four afflictions for a long time. They are not subdued by the wisdom of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but are destroyed by the Tathagata's wisdom of enlightenment. Blessed One, the ground of ignorance is powerful. The second chapter ends. Blessed One, just as the three existences arise from the cause of contaminated karma due to the condition of grasping, similarly, Blessed One, due to the condition of the ground of ignorance, the three mind-made bodies of the Arhats, the Solitary Buddhas, and the Bodhisattvas who have attained power arise from the cause of uncontaminated karma. Blessed One, the ground of ignorance is the support for the arising of these three mind-made bodies in these three, and for the manifestation of uncontaminated karma. Blessed One, without a condition, there is no arising of a condition. Therefore, the ground of ignorance is different from the ground that abides in desire for existence, because it is the condition for the three mind-made bodies and for uncontaminated karma. Even so, it does not have a common function with the ground that abides in desire for existence. Blessed One, these four grounds of ignorance are completely different; they are the ground of complete liberation, the ground to be abandoned by the Buddha, and the ground to be destroyed by the Tathagata's wisdom of enlightenment. Why is that? Blessed One, even though the Arhats and Solitary Buddhas have abandoned the four grounds, they do not obtain the power of mastery over the exhaustion of defilements, nor do they manifest it. Blessed One, the so-called "exhaustion of defilements" is a synonym for the ground of ignorance. Blessed One, therefore, the Arhats, the Solitary Buddhas, and the Bodhisattvas who belong to the last existence are also obscured, limited, and completely entangled by the ground of ignorance, causing them to be deluded, and therefore they do not fully understand those dharmas.
