It is a great diligence! Goddess, for example, a strong man, even if he cannot completely destroy something, can make it appear and cause it to arise internally. Goddess, similarly, upholding the true Dharma, even if it is small, will harm the evil demons, causing them to arise sorrow and utter lamentations. Goddess, I have not seen any other virtuous Dharma that can harm the evil demons, cause them to arise sorrow, and utter lamentations in the same way as upholding the true Dharma. Goddess, for example, the king of bulls, the chief of the herd, with its height and breadth, overwhelms all the herds of bulls, appearing majestic, truly majestic. Goddess, similarly, the upholder of the true Dharma of the Great Vehicle, even if small, can, with its growth and vastness, overwhelm all the virtuous Dharmas of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Goddess, for example, Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, with its height and breadth, overwhelms all the black mountains, appearing particularly prominent. Goddess, similarly, the upholder of the true Dharma of the Great Vehicle, who does not regard body and life and possesses a mind of benefiting beings, with its growth and vastness, overwhelms all the virtuous Dharmas of those who newly enter the Great Vehicle and regard body and life, what need is there to mention others? Goddess, therefore, beings should correctly engage in upholding the true Dharma, should correctly teach it, should correctly praise it, should correctly rejoice in it, should uphold it, should respect it. Goddess, upholding the true Dharma is so important! So great is the fruit! So great is the benefit! Goddess, even if I were to speak for countless immeasurable eons about the qualities and benefits of upholding the true Dharma, Goddess, there would be no end or limit to the qualities and benefits of upholding the true Dharma. Goddess, upholding the true Dharma is so

Thus, it possesses infinite qualities. Goddess, you should be proud to uphold the true Dharma, which is approved by all the Buddhas, what I have taught, and what you have spoken today. Then, the goddess Śrīmālā said "Well done" to the Bhagavan, and having received encouragement from the Bhagavan, she spoke these words to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, what is called "true Dharma" is a term for the Mahāyāna. Why is that? Bhagavan, because the Mahāyāna completely distinguishes all the vehicles of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, as well as all the virtuous dharmas of the mundane and supramundane. Bhagavan, for example, the four great Nāga kings arise from Lake Anavatapta. Bhagavan, similarly, all Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, as well as all the virtuous dharmas of the mundane and supramundane, also arise from the Mahāyāna. Bhagavan, for example, whatever kinds of seeds there are, as well as grass, trees, shrubs, medicines, and forests, all of these rely on the great earth, abide on the great earth, and thus grow, develop, and flourish. Bhagavan, similarly, whatever vehicles of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas there are, as well as all the virtuous dharmas of the mundane and supramundane, all of these rely on the Mahāyāna, abide on the Mahāyāna, and thus grow, develop, and flourish. Bhagavan, therefore, if one abides in the Mahāyāna and upholds the Mahāyāna, then all the vehicles of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, as well as all the virtuous dharmas of the mundane and supramundane, will also be relied upon, abided in, and upheld. Bhagavan, for example, these six aspects of the abiding of the true Dharma, the decline of the true Dharma, the Prātimokṣa, the Vinaya, ordination, and full ordination, and the six aspects that the Bhagavan has taught and named, all arise from the understanding of this Mahāyāna. Why is that? Bhagavan, the naming of what is called "the abiding of the true Dharma" is one that has the intention of the Mahāyāna, Bhagavan, the abiding of the Mahāyāna itself is the true Dharma...

The Dharma abides. World-Honored One, the designation of what is called "the decline of the sacred Dharma" is in accordance with the intention of the Great Vehicle. World-Honored One, the decline of the Great Vehicle itself is the decline of the sacred Dharma. World-Honored One, the two Dharmas called Pratimoksha and Vinaya are the same in meaning, only the letters are different. World-Honored One, what is called Vinaya is the training of those of the Great Vehicle. Why is that? World-Honored One, it is because of the Tathagata that one goes forth and receives full ordination. World-Honored One, since that is the case, the designation of what is called Vinaya, going forth, and receiving full ordination is the aggregate of ethical conduct of the Great Vehicle's ritual. World-Honored One, there is no going forth or full ordination in the Hearer and Solitary Buddha vehicles. Why is that? Because there is no going forth or full ordination for the sake of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but it is for the sake of the Tathagata that Hearers and Solitary Buddhas go forth and receive full ordination. World-Honored One, Arhats and Solitary Buddhas also take refuge in the Tathagata. World-Honored One, Arhats and Solitary Buddhas are also accompanied by fear. Why is that? World-Honored One, it is because Arhats and Solitary Buddhas also abide closely with the perception of unbearable fear towards all conditioned phenomena. World-Honored One, it is like an executioner brandishing a sword. World-Honored One, since that is the case, they have not truly attained the ultimate bliss of liberation. World-Honored One, why is that? Because those who have taken refuge do not seek other refuges. World-Honored One, just as sentient beings who have no refuge seek liberation from whatever frightens them, in the same way, World-Honored One, Arhats and Solitary Buddhas also have that fear, and because they are frightened by that fear, Arhats and Solitary Buddhas
