Furthermore, if even a single mind free from desire does not arise, what need is there to mention obtaining fruit? That is impossible. Venerable Audrakṣema, this is called a Śramaṇa like a band of thieves. Venerable Audrakṣema, what is the essence of a Śramaṇa? Venerable Audrakṣema, it is like this: among grains, those that are unripe, not firm, powerless, and resemble grains, those are called the essence. Venerable Audrakṣema, similarly, the essence of a Śramaṇa is also like that, always weak and powerless, bound by knots, oppressed by Māra, oppressed by all afflictions, seized by afflictions, like being scattered by the wind. Venerable Audrakṣema, the so-called essence of a Śramaṇa is the false words of those immoral and wicked Bhikṣus, and I have named them the essence of a Śramaṇa. Venerable Audrakṣema, what is the destroyer of a Śramaṇa? Venerable Audrakṣema, it is like this: in the midst of abundant barley sprouts, something that harms the barley grows, and it resembles the color, shape, and marks of the sprouts. The owners of the barley will have this thought: all of these are barley. However, when the barley sprouts grow ears, they will no longer have the thought of barley for the thing that harms the barley. Venerable Audrakṣema, similarly, those Bhikṣus who destroy the Śramaṇa also reside in the Saṃgha of Bhikṣus, and they resemble those who are virtuous, endowed with qualities, and are places of giving in color, marks, and shape. The givers and patrons will have the thought that these are Śramaṇas, and they will think of them as places of giving. However, if a foolish person claims to be a Śramaṇa when they are not, claims to be practicing Brahmacarya when they are not, and is rotten and leaking inside, such a person will emerge from the Saṃgha, and after dying, will fall from the aggregates of death and go to hell. Gods, Nāgas, Yakṣas, Gandharvas, and those with divine eyes will see that he is born in hell. After seeing this, even foolish barley will no longer be foolish, because this person previously performed sinful deeds with the color and form of a Śramaṇa, so he will be born in the great hell.

Just as barley is damaged and has no merit of barley, so too, this person has no fruit of the merit of a shramana. Thus, generating great compassion, he said, "This Light-Bearer is one who corrupts the shramanas." Light-Bearer, what is the pretense of being like a shramana? Light-Bearer, for example, there is an iron called "Great Ragan," which, if thoroughly refined and purified, becomes like gold. However, it does not have the value of gold, the color of gold, the luster, or the weight when weighed on a scale. Light-Bearer, similarly, a shramana who pretends to be like a shramana washes his body very cleanly, wears beautiful and elegant clothes, and all the external conduct of a shramana is completely pure. Walking, coming, looking forward, looking left and right, contracting and stretching, and using the monastic robe, alms bowl, and holding the robe are all done with mindfulness. However, he is conquered by attachment, conquered by hatred, conquered by ignorance, conquered by afflictions, conquered by gain and honor, conquered by pride, great pride, pride beyond pride, excessive pride, slight pride, and wrong pride, enslaved by afflictions, does not value the Dharma that should be valued with reverence, strives for bodily comfort but does not strive to restrain with discipline, values food and clothing but does not value the noble Dharma, does not fear the faults of the next world, values this life but does not value the next life, relies on nourishing the body, gain, honor, and fame, but does not rely on practicing the Dharma, indulges in various kinds of gambling, is stained by sin, strives for worldly affairs, has a mind similar to that of householders, is happy with happiness and suffers with suffering, and is conquered by attachment and anger. Therefore, his shramana Dharma, all conduct, mind, and mental factors all belong to the beings of hell and the animal realm.
