He is immersed in the world of Yama, and does not match the value of asceticism, the mountain, and the measure of asceticism. Kashyapa, this is called a disguised ascetic. Kashyapa, how does one become an ascetic who has lost his splendor? Kashyapa, for example, if any man or woman, boy or girl, has their radiance taken away by a non-human being, they are considered weak, ugly in appearance, and repulsive. Thus, for those who have lost their radiance, medicine, secret mantras, or lineage mantras cannot restore it; they will not change in the end except to die. Kashyapa, similarly, if a monk does not have the splendor of morality, the splendor of samadhi, the splendor of wisdom, the splendor of liberation, the splendor of seeing the wisdom of liberation, the splendor of loving-kindness, the splendor of compassion, the splendor of joy, the splendor of equanimity, the splendor of generosity and correct discipline, the splendor of determination, the splendor of the merits of asceticism, the splendor of abiding in the noble lineage, the splendor of diminished merits and requisites of practice, and the splendor of completely purifying body, speech, and mind, this is called Kashyapa, an ascetic who has lost his splendor. Kashyapa, for those who have lost their splendor, the medicine compounded by the Tathagata is of no avail. For example, the medicine of non-attachment to desire, loving-kindness to counter hatred, dependent origination to counter ignorance, appropriate attention to counter afflictions, delighting in solitude away from commotion, dwelling in solitude to abandon all grasping, completely purifying body, speech, and mind to guard the three, and the medicine of completely purifying samadhi to make the mind workable, these compounded by the Tathagata are of no avail. After death, he will fall into hell, and will not change in the end. Furthermore, there are medicines that transcend the world, such as understanding the aggregates, understanding the elements, understanding the sources, understanding dependent origination, and understanding emptiness.

Even these transcendent medicines that know desirelessness, signlessness, and wishlessness cannot stop him. After he dies, he will become a hell being, and there will be no other end for him. When this teaching was being taught, five hundred yogic monks, feeling discouraged that they should not enjoy offerings of faith since their discipline was not completely pure, renounced their vows and returned home. Other monks ridiculed them, saying, "It is very bad that these great virtuous yogic monks have fallen away from the teaching." The Blessed One said to those monks, "Monks, do not say that it is very bad that these great virtuous monks have fallen away from the teaching in this way. Why is that? Monks, dwelling at home out of displeasure is the nature of those with faith. These monks, with great faith and aspiration, but filled with regret, having heard this teaching, felt discouraged that they should not purify offerings of faith since their discipline was not completely pure. O Kasyapa, I will prophesy that these monks, from here, will die and be reborn in the heaven of Tushita, and they will be among the first assembly of hearers of the Tathagata Maitreya." The third chapter, called "Like a Low Caste Ascetic." The second volume is complete. Then, the venerable Mahakasyapa said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, how should a monk be advised?" The Blessed One said, "O Kasyapa, there are two kinds of monks whom I allow to be advised. Which two? The monk who is completely pure in discipline, who sees the next world as fearful of wrongdoing, who relies on the ripening of karma, who is conscientious and full of remorse, and the one who has exhausted defilements and become an arhat. O Kasyapa, I allow these two undegenerate monks to be advised. Why is that? O Kasyapa, in this well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, there are those who have gone forth from various castes, who have various mental inclinations, and who practice for the sake of abandonment.

They dwell in various places. Some monks delight in secluded monasteries and peaceful beds. Some are alms-gatherers, while others reside in populous villages. Some maintain a completely pure life, while others diligently pursue extensive learning. Some are preachers of the Dharma, while others uphold the Vinaya. Some are mantra-holders. Some enter villages, cities, towns, regions, and royal palaces to teach the Dharma, for the minds and behaviors of other beings are difficult to guard. O Mahākāśyapa, the steward monk should please the minds of all the Sangha of monks. O Mahākāśyapa, those remote beds of the forest-dwelling monks should not be entirely assigned by the steward monk. The steward should protect those forest-dwelling monks, not invite them at inappropriate times, nor send them away at inappropriate times. O Mahākāśyapa, if a forest-dwelling monk encounters a learning task that pertains to the Sangha's affairs, the steward monk should handle it himself. Alternatively, he should rely on another monk to do the task, without causing harm to the forest-dwelling monk. O Mahākāśyapa, for those monks who practice alms-gathering, the steward monk should distribute the food. O Mahākāśyapa, for those monks who are practitioners of yoga, the steward monk should provide suitable equipment, medicine for illness, and necessary items. Wherever the yoga-practicing monk resides, the steward monk should not make loud or harsh noises, nor allow others to do so. The steward monk should protect the yoga-practicing monk and also prepare his bedding. He should provide food, pleasing items, and provisions suitable for the yoga practitioner's place. Regarding that monk, one should generate a very precious thought, thinking, 'This monk dwells here relying on the teachings of the Tathāgata. I should provide him with abundant and suitable resources.' O Mahākāśyapa, for those monks who diligently pursue extensive learning
