It burns fiercely, spreads and burns everywhere, turning into flames. What is the reason for this? It is because he intimidated and spoke malicious words. A monastic acting as a manager, regarding the possessions of the Sangha that are gathered and stored, does not distribute them on time, but instead raises his own status, torments others before giving, or gives to some and not to others, or gives to some and not to others. This unwholesome karma will cause him to be born in the realm of pretas, in a place called "covered with excrement and dirt." Having been born there, when other pretas bring food and show it to him, at the time of showing it, his eyes are closed and cannot open, he can only look at the food and experience the suffering of being afflicted by hunger and thirst. Even after a hundred thousand years, he will not be able to obtain that food. Even if he gets that food in one out of a hundred opportunities, it will turn into vomit and pus and blood. What is the reason for this? It is because he did not satisfy those who uphold morality, those who possess qualities, and those who are worthy of offerings, and he was not content with his own gains. A monastic acting as a manager, if he misappropriates the possessions of the Sangha, the Sangha of the four directions, or the stupa, then the ripening of his karma is something I cannot finish speaking about even in countless eons. A monastic acting as a manager, if he hears of such faults as these, becomes angry, insults, harbors malice, or becomes enraged, then I say that this is irreparable. Therefore, having heard such excellent Dharma, a monastic acting as a manager should purify his body, speech, and mind completely, and protect himself and others. A monastic acting as a manager, it is easier to eat his own flesh than to use the bowl, Dharma robes, alms, medicine for the sick, or other utensils blessed by the Three Jewels. Then, the venerable Mahakashyapa said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, you have taught the Dharma of negligence for the negligent, and the Dharma of shame for the ashamed. The chapter on the manager, the fourth chapter. Blessed One, which monastics dwelling in solitary places, my solitary place

If anyone offends by claiming, "I am a recluse," how does the Blessed One define a bhikkhu as a recluse? How does he define a bhikkhu as an alms-gatherer? How does he define a bhikkhu as one who holds rag robes? After this request, the Blessed One spoke thus to the venerable Mahākāśyapa: "Kāśyapa, here, a bhikkhu who is a recluse should establish a dwelling in a secluded place, in a forest, or at the edge of the wilderness. Where there are no thieves, no cowherds or shepherds, no poisonous snakes, no many wild animals and birds, few mosquitoes and flies, little noise, and little clamor, one should dwell entirely in such a secluded place. When dwelling in that secluded place, one should generate eight kinds of attention. What are the eight? Not regarding the body, not regarding life, not regarding gain and respect, not regarding all disturbances, one should vow to be like a wild animal dying in a secluded place, one should dwell in the secluded place having properly taken up the qualities of the secluded place, one should live by the livelihood of the Dharma and not by a wrong livelihood, and one should live by a livelihood free from entanglement and affliction. Having generated these eight kinds of attention, one should dwell in the secluded place. When dwelling in that secluded place, one should generate eight kinds of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings. What are the eight? Loving-kindness that benefits, loving-kindness that brings happiness, loving-kindness that does no harm, loving-kindness that is true, loving-kindness that is without difference, loving-kindness of peace, loving-kindness of definite mindfulness of the Dharma, and loving-kindness of completely pure intention. One should generate these eight kinds of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings. When dwelling in that secluded place, one should generate this kind of thought: 'I have come here from a long journey, alone and without a companion. Whether I do good or bad, there is no friend to encourage me. However, the gods, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, and all the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, know the thoughts of my mind. If I dwell in a secluded place and am controlled by an unwholesome mind, then they will be influenced by it. I have come from a long journey, alone and without a companion.'
