Even if a foolish, immoral person were to fully utilize even a portion of what is given in faith, equivalent to one-eighth of a hair's tip, for the sake of completely purifying the giver and the recipient, the amount of karma accumulated from utilizing even that tiny portion of hair's tip would transform into a vast ocean of karma, and so forth. Kashyapa, therefore, you should instruct that one should fully utilize what is given in faith with completely pure morality. When this teaching was being expounded, two hundred yogic practice monks, upon hearing this teaching, were greatly moved, shedding tears and saying, 'Even if we were to die, we would not partake of even a single morsel of alms given in faith until we attain the fruit.' The Blessed One said, 'Excellent, excellent, virtuous beings! This scripture is adorned by those who possess shame, regret, and fear of wrongdoing in the next world.' Kashyapa, I allow two monks to receive what is given in faith: those who are endowed and those who are liberated. And again, two: those who view all conditioned phenomena as impermanent, and those whose minds are completely liberated and abide in loving-kindness. Monks, among them, the endowed monk, the yogic practitioner who has entered my teaching, having fully utilized the robes, alms, bedding, medicine, and provisions from the giver and the benefactor, sees the faults of samsara, sees all conditioned phenomena as impermanent, understands all conditioned phenomena as suffering, believes that all phenomena are without self, and contemplates nirvana as peace. Even if he were to fully utilize offerings given in faith as large as Mount Meru, the merit would become exceedingly pure. Whatever giver and benefactor from whom he has fully utilized offerings given in faith, from that, their ripening of merit will become great wealth and great benefit. Why is that? Monks, among all objects of meritorious action arising from material things, that which abides in a mind of loving-kindness is supreme. Monks, whatever monk utilizes the robes and alms of the giver and benefactor

and bedding, and all possessions, and abides in immeasurable liberation of mind, then the ripening of that giver and patron should also be known to be immeasurable. O Āyuṣmat, even if all the great oceans in the three thousand great thousand world realms were to be completely exhausted, the corresponding cause of merit would not be completely exhausted. O Āyuṣmat, if someone were to fully utilize what was given by the giver and patron with faith, and then fall into the wrong view of immoral conduct, that foolish person should see how much harm they have entered into. O Āyuṣmat, therefore, a bhikṣu should completely abandon such things as the defilement of a practitioner, the faults of a practitioner, the untamed nature of a practitioner, the deceit of a practitioner, the trickery of a practitioner, and the cunning of a practitioner with a pure intention. O Āyuṣmat, a bhikṣu, a practitioner, is one who does not leak from the eye, nor from the ear, nor from the nose, nor from the tongue, nor from the body, nor from the mind. Therefore, they are called a bhikṣu, a practitioner. Possessing the six sense bases, the six consciousnesses, and the six recollections, abiding respectfully in the noble ones, and abiding in the six dharmas that go to the other shore. Therefore, they are called a bhikṣu, a practitioner. The first chapter on the practitioner. O Āyuṣmat, a bhikṣu is called a bhikṣu because they have destroyed the afflictions. They have destroyed the notion of self, destroyed the notion of sentient beings, destroyed the notion of life, destroyed the notion of nourishment, destroyed the notion of a person, destroyed the notion of a male, destroyed the notion of a female, destroyed the notion of a boy, and destroyed the notion of a girl. Therefore, they are called a bhikṣu. They cultivate the body, cultivate morality, cultivate the mind, cultivate wisdom, are without fear, cross the river of existence, observe arising and ceasing, are free from all fears, and abide on the path of fearlessness. Therefore, they are called a bhikṣu. O Āyuṣmat, if someone does not possess these qualities, yet claims to be
