One should enter a village, city, or town for alms with a very determined mind, and one should act consistently. One should generate the mind in this way: 'I will receive food from a man, but not from a woman.' Or, 'I will receive food from a woman, but not from a man.' Or, 'I will receive food from a boy, but not from a girl.' Or, 'I will receive food from a girl, but not from a boy.' Or, 'I will receive good food, but not bad food.' Or, 'I will receive food after being respected, but not after being disrespected.' Or, 'I will receive food easily, but not with difficulty.' Or, 'I will be greeted by men, women, boys, and girls.' Or, 'Will I be noticed immediately?' 'Will I need to stay?' 'Will I receive very abundant food?' 'I will receive various delicious foods, but not inferior food like the food of the poor.' Like this, he should not generate all unwholesome mental activities. One should also wear such armor: even if one does not receive food, one should not be completely discouraged, and one should not generate the idea of good and bad. This is the nature of the Dharma of alms-seeking bhikshus. What is the reason for this? Because most sentient beings are greedy for taste, and having committed sinful actions for the sake of food, they are born in the hells. Those who are content, not greedy, not attached, not craving for taste, content with the sense of the tongue, and who can survive on whatever inferior food, they, having died, at the time of death, will be born in the heavens. They will attain a good rebirth among gods and humans. They will be born as gods and eat ambrosia. Light Protector, therefore, an alms-seeking bhikshu should prevent craving for taste, and with a determined mind, even if he eats stale food that is seven days old, he should not be discouraged. What is the reason for this? Because he thinks: 'I eat food in order to nourish the body and accumulate the accumulations of the path to liberation.' Light Protector, the alms-seeking bhikshu, the food that comes into the alms bowl, the food that falls into the alms bowl, that which is in accordance with the Dharma, of the Dharma,

attainment. It should be shared and eaten with fellow monks who practice Brahmacharya. O Light-increaser, if a monk is obstructed while begging for alms, and there is no sick person to care for, and he is unable to beg for alms, then he should think thus: I am without protection, I am alone and without a second, I am ordained, my friend is the Dharma, I rely on the Dharma, I am unwell and suffering, extremely ill, what is the Dharma medicine spoken by the Thus-Gone-One, I should examine those Dharmas as I have heard them, with proper attention. O Light-increaser, for him, to individually contemplate this body as it truly is, is to apply proper attention. When he individually contemplates the faults of this body as they truly are, the one who engages in proper attention will become single-minded, endowed with mindfulness, and endowed with awareness, and the place where the first dhyana arises will exist. Having attained dhyana, if he desires the bliss of dhyana, he can dwell on the food of the bliss of dhyana for one day, two days, three days, or up to seven days. If he cannot generate dhyana by entering into yoga practice in this way, then such a diligent and yoga-practicing monk who abides in the Dharma will have clairvoyance and will offer food to the manifest gods, nagas, and yakshas. Why is that? Because this is the concordant cause for yoga practitioners, therefore he can obtain the support of the gods. O Light-increaser, if clouds gather and rain falls, and a monk who begs for alms is unable to beg for alms, then he should put on the garment of loving-kindness for food, and abide in the attention of remembering the Dharma. If he fasts for two or three days, he should think thus: Just like the beings in the preta and Yama's world, who have committed evil deeds, even after a hundred years they cannot find a bit of saliva or dust to eat. Therefore, since I abide in properly attending to the Dharma, I should not cause the body to weaken or the mind to weaken, and I should endure hunger and thirst. In order to cultivate the noble path, one should not interrupt the effort.
